I don't think he was lucky. The hawk is in the defensive posture they use after a hit has been made. Blowing the pic up it looks like blood coming from it's nose and mouth and on his left front leg. Plus he has the gut shot humped up look. I think the hawk is just watching him walk off and die. JMHO
