Mad Wildlife Eye

I think this has been posted before, but I did not have any luck finding it. Are these video systems worth it or are they junk? I had a hard time finding any info on them, and Cabelas has stopped carrying them which can't be a good sign. I know some of the trail cam suppliers sell boards for video cameras and I hate to make more work for vman, but maybe we could have a homebrew video 101 course? I am just stuck on the idea of a video trail camera right now and not sure how to pursue it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I think you have too much time on your hands. Maybe they should place you at a station that works once in a while. Just kidding, I was wondering why that Wild Life Eye wasn't in Cabela's anymore. It is a cool idea, but seemed to fizzle out in a hurry.

Nevermind, I found the old thread. Doesn't sound like a very good investment. By the way, nice hat in your avatar Jason. Is that new glow in the dark camo or what. You would think one of your seed dealers could hook you up with a new one. And you will be eating your words the next time a plane crashes.

The hat is the new style Da-Glo! Works well when the sun is out. At least you are working today, I myself had to take one of those Kelly days to look for sheds. No luck so far. Good night for them yotes last night!

You should leave the italians out of this! Minga, you don't want to upset dem Cuz. Oh, you meant Day-glo, not dag--well, you know.

They are cool, but the newer video cams SUCK for IR. If you have an older sony video cam you would be ok though

Have any specific sony models in mind? I remember some that had the nightshot feature. I thought about cruising the pawnshops to pick one up.

also if your serious about it, id buy a bg2 now. Not many left and hags is done selling for now.

V-man, have you ever dealt with pixcontroller.com? I know they have kits for video set-ups and the price doesn't seem terrible. Just curious.

Huntcrazy - Here is a videocam tutorial i found on another site. Might give you an idea of what all is involed. I built one last summer and want to do another one before this summer.

The tutorial is not completely done yet, but almost there.
Some things to consider. In the tutorial, their videocam uses a servo to move the nightshot switch when it get dark. I don't like the idea of a servo running, more noise and more things to break. If you find an old enough Sony 8mm, you wont need the servo. Or, you could just hack the videocam and leave it on nightshot all the time. Also the build shows how to solder up an IR array. You can also buy them prebuilt off ebay or from Whitetail Supply. Save alot of time.

Here is the link.

Have had one for over a year now and have not had any problems with it. I use the Sony DCR-HC21 camera and it works great. Have used it for the last three weeks to keep tabs on the bucks in my area as to when they are dropping and it has been working just fine. Even with the bitter cold that we have been having all I have had to do is change the camera battery every morning, but am also getting about 30 minutes of video footage overnight in 10 sec. increments. Don't know why you can't get the unit anymore but mine seems to be working very well.
