'Spose I'd better tell the story. We made a decision to sit in an 8 acre, L-shaped alfalfa field that's probably 95% surrounded by woods. We woke up at 4:30, but were still struggling to beat the sun out to the field, and the birds were gobbling by the time we got there. We decided to sit at the top of the field where we heard the most birds, but also where we couldn't see the opposite leg of the L. There was one tom closer than 100 yards that seemed to be cooperating, but by the sound of it he got henned up soon after fly down. At 7:45, Matt said he thought he heard a gobble on the opposite end of the field, and less than 30 seconds after that 2 hens walked across the field 150 yards away. The whole time we were taking turns resting on the floor of the Double Bull and I, guide that I am, was lying down when Matt whispered "Hey, Nate. I, uh, think we got a male turkey out here."
I hustled up off of my bum (quietly, of course) and saw a noticeably larger bird out where the hens had crossed. I told him he was gonna kill this bird, and after a few soft clucks and yelps he was heading towards our decoys. I kinda hunkered down below the windows, peeking up every now and then to make sure he was still coming in. The last ime I looked he was 225 yards away and eyeing our setup, when I ducked back down and whispered "Shoot! Shoot!". BOOM! Matt's first bird was a big tom-jake with a 4 1/2 inch beard and center tail feathers barely sticking above the rest, shot at 8:03 in the morning. The lucky sonuvagun tagged out on his first morning turkey hunting.
