Making a striker

Well I didn't take any pictures along the way but it’s not a big project or anything, just something that I wanted to make. For a class in school we have to build something on the computer and then physically make it. I choose to make a slate call and striker. Right now I only have the striker made but I think I’m going to start on the slate call tomorrow. I’m doing pretty much everything on the lathe. I brought it home and tried it on my power crystal and regular slate call and I think it sounds pretty darn good.

Quick question for anyone to give input on. Should I try to stain or put any type of finish on the striker? Right now it is just the wood, and to show how much I know I don’t even know what kind of wood it is.

Here are a couple pictures.

That's pretty neat. I have never made one but I think if I stained it, I might leave the bottom half inch unstained. Not sure if it matters or not but you will just sand it off anyways so maybe it wouldn't hurt. Just a thought. Can't wait to see the finished product with the slate.
