Hi

I've been chomping at the bit the last 3 years and its almost time to get back down to your great state for my DYI bow hunt!

Bad part is that it looks like the one piece of private property I had permission to hunt might be getting leased here at the last minute I've been informed.
So I figured I better have a plan B or even C just in case.

I don't have much time so I was wondering if any of you might want to share any info about any of the public land down there? I've started printing out stuff and have a start on that. I am familiar with one place from the last time I was there in 07. I'm not asking for any secret spots or to be led by the hand or any thing like that. Just getting pointed in the right direction would be great. You can send me a private message, actually I'd prefer it that way.

Another option would be to trade a hunt or something like that if need be. My family runs a large farm/ranch operation here in the northern plains. We have lots of upland game birds as well as some good muleys and antelope, if that might interest any of you.

Like I said I'm a Do it yourself kind of hunter, not looking at leasing anything or getting a guide. And you sure as heck don't have to worry about me buying anything up thats for sure!
I just want to come down and enjoy a good bowhunt again in your fine state. And hopefully this lease deal falls thru and I can hunt the way I'd planned to come the end of the month!

Any information is greatly appreciated and will not be shared.
I will be hunting by myself and don't have a problem tenting it.

Thanks!

Thanks a bunch I'll give that area a look! Does anyone know anything about that Iowa sportsmans atlas? I think I'm going to order one of those also.

You might want to wait till after early muzzleloader is done. Public land around eastern Iowa is full of muzzleloaders right now. It will probably be several weeks after the army of orange before the bucks will show during daylight hours. Honestly; i've never seen so many hunters in my life! You would think it was 1st season shotgun.

He's right, they are in zone 4...anything west of the interstate.

my bad.

There are still county parks, Little River and not too far away are other options.

Look into Stevens state forest south of Lucas. There are some great deer in there. You could stay in Osceola and it is only a few miles to Lucas, then to the ground. Its a big chunk, and if you hunt a little farther back and a little smarter, you got as good of chance as anywhere to kill a giant.

I agree with Nanny. The Stevens State Forest is very large so you can get deep and away from any other bow hunters that may be out. I used to camp in the forest. There are some primitive camp sites and they usually have a few other bow hunters in them so it makes it feel a little like deer camp. If you put your work in you have a chance to shoot a big deer on that piece of public. Good Luck!

Thanks a bunch fellas, that stephans forest area looks like my kind of hunting! I like the primative camping area as well! I was wondering about those other area and figured they must have been in 4.
Thanks again!
