Hello, I'm from Michigan and want to hunt Iowa for the 2004 gun season. We have a chance to hunt private land in Palo Alto Co. I have already read the info. about non-resident hunting. How is the deer hunting in this NW county? Which season would be better to apply for in this county? If anyone would like to contact me about this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. You won't be in "Giant Bucksville" like you would in other areas of the state, but there are plenty of deer and you should have a good hunt. Lots of public land as well, but you'll have a fair amount of hunting pressure no matter which season you choose. Some top notch waterfowl and upland hunting in that general area, so you may want to plan some time for that as well. Palo Alto county has a nature center north of Ruthven with lots of maps, etc. available for public lands. Good luck!

The Des Moines River also runs through the county and there are timber belts along the river, especially by Graettinger. Also lake areas around Emmetsburg and in nearby Emmet County (Ingham-High Lakes, Swan Lake). Personally took my biggest shotgun buck (140+ if not for broken brow tine) southeast of Graettinger though it started out as an Emmet County deer ... deer drive gone wild.

Good luck and like NW Buck said, the waterfowl hunting is great, too.

hunting in NW iowa is ok but there are much better places to hunt...can't tell yea. which season is best, that depends on your surroundings, weather, and if anyone is hunting around the farm you will be hunting. good luck. apply early.
