Michigan Gets $500,000 Federal Grant to Improve Hunter Access

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The state is getting $500,000 to help improve a program that pays certain landowners in southern Michigan who allow hunters on their property.

The federal grant announced Monday is going to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

The grant will help expand the natural resources department's Hunter Access Program, which offers payments to owners of property that's 40 acres or larger.

With the additional funding, officials say they hope to use more land that's protected under the state's Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program for hunting and expand opportunities for hunting by youth.
