Might have to start deer hunting

To start off, I've been a long time lurker on Iowa Whitetail and have always enjoyed all of the photos, discussions, suggestions, etc. on this site. It's a great site for any outdoor enthusiast.

I'm a die hard pheasant hunter, so most weekends are spent hiking through CRP fields, and not in the deer stand. I've always been under the impression that there aren't many good deer around our area. I'm in the process of purchasing some land and we were able to setup a trail cam on the property already. Boy was I suprised when we pulled the card the first couple of times! Just proves you don't know what's out there until you spend time in the woods (or put these great trailcams out!).

I might have to start spending mornings/evenings in the stand and the daytime in the fields. Besides this site, I've got a great mentor and gear supplier for an in-law (gunrunr), so I shouldn't have any problem learning the tricks of the trade for attempting to down one of these....

(Sorry for the rant, but I'm starting to get the fever)

Any thoughts on this last deer - injured at some point, or would the right side just grow like that?

Hard to say on the injury. Typically the injury is to the opposite side as the deformed antler. That would put the injury on the side shown in the photo and he looks ok, but he may walk with a limp or have some unseen old injury. Could be that he damaged the antler itself or skull plate as well.
Heck of a nice bunch of bucks at any rate. I know where I would be, morning and night!

I concur....

Those are certainly some nice looking bucks!

Yeah, those photos will give you the fever alright. And as far as I know, there ain't no cure. It becomes a life long affliction.

Good luck with your new disease.

If I were you I'd start practice shooting. Awesome photos!!!

I love Pheasant hunting also... I want to be out in the grass come November. And I feel like I owe it to my dog to be out there. For that reason, I've always tried to take a deer in October. The past 2 years I've taken a couple 8 pointers on Oct. 28th. All for the reason to get out there and kick up some birds. But this year, I think I'm gonna concentrate more on hunting the Rut. I've yet to do so, and everyone tells me once I do, I'll be in the stand every November. Maybe that's why I haven't done it yet...

Anyway, you have some nice bucks there. I'm sure you, as am I, are anxious to be in the tree come November.
