Missouri Non - Resident Deer Fees

Well, we knew that something like this was probally going to happen. But, we need to stand behind the Iowa DNR on this one.It doesn't seem fair to single out certian states for the extra cash, and maybe we can boycott MO until it is an across the board increase.
Now the guys from Missouri can stop complaining about the Iowa increase! Or, ask their Senators for a kickback and use it on an Iowa tag.

My 2 cents..............

heck thats cheap, for 2 deer and 2 turkey with a bow , for $120.00 . I been hunting mo. for over 20 years now and I for one I'm not going to let a few dollars matter . I'm making memories here and every once in a while I take home a deer or two.I live to hunt mo., shoot fire ,I bought a tick suit a couple years back, just so I could stay out there longer, I'm catching fish out of the ponds like crazy during mid-day too,,,,,,,noooooooooooooo I'm having to much fun in missouri to give that up. and if I don't see another non-res hunter in the woods at that time of year..............oh well, life is too short , enjoy what GOD gave to all of us...........j.b.

Seems fair. Heck, they should have a reciprocity law and charge non-residents whatever their state charges.

I have hunted Missouri every year sence 1971 (31) years. I also have taken one to two deer and turkey every year down there. I remimber when it was around $25 but, I think I will pass this year the quality of deer is not worth $120 + a $25 surcharge $145 to me. I have taken only about 3 bucks down there that would make P&Y in 31 years and you just don't see P&Yers down there like here in Iowa. I have a grandson hunting deer this year and will take the time to hunt with him here early around home and than take down to souther Iowa to hunt bucks in the rut and can also fill a bonus tag down there. Like Jaybee has said I have a lot of memories down there taking deer , turkeys, fishing and quality time to myself but, in the 38 years I have hunted I have lots of bowhunting memories.

I think it is awesome and don't blame them one bit. Besides, the additional funds are going to fund anti-poaching programs. BTW-it is amazing how Iowas's higher license and habitat fees turned the pheasant population around in only one nesting season! Certainly could not have been the weather.

The last thing I heard was that the MDC was considering a "Reciprocity Law". I guess they chose another route. Personally, I would love to pay $145.00 for my tag in Iowa. It was only 6 or 7 years ago when I paid only $110.00 for a non resident tag in Iowa. I guess every State is jumping on the "greedy wagon". I've often wondered if the "Anti Hunting" groups are lobbying for higher fees to eliminate hunters.

I agree with headgear, Missouri is still a good deal on tag prices, I just would have liked to see an across the board increase instead of singleling out a couple of states hunters to pay a higher price. If they did it because of your race, imagine the can of worms that would open.

I'd like to see Minnesota adjust the non-resident fishing license cost for all of the Iowa "Bullhead Specialists" who come up here and keep everything that bites. Since Iowa sticks it to us on the deer hunting license cost we should charge Iowans accordingly, similar to what MO is doing. There are far more Iowan anglers fishing MN than Minnesotans hunting deer in Iowa. The Iowans I see on the lakes up here keep almost everything, from 36" muskies to every size walleye that swims. They have never heard of catch and release. At least we "release" the young bucks when we hunt in Iowa!!!!!!!

Hey Headgear, Glad to see you decided to join in the fun! I hated to think I was the only "Confederate Yankee" on here!

I think a boycott is the wrong answer. 4 out of 5 states that border Missouri were listed because of the fact that they were substantially more expensive than Missouri. I paid $160 last year for my Iowa nonresident archery deer tag and had to cough up $321 this year for the same tag. That is quite an increase over one year. Missouri might nickel and dime you to death but at least they don't rip your leg off getting to your wallet. If you look on the Permit Summary page on the MDC homepage it only calls for the $25 surcharge for the nonresident firearms tag. It says nothing about it for the nonresident archery tag which leaves your archery tag at $120. Not only that but you get two animals with that tag. Pretty dad gum good deal for all you archery boys and girls. I would never boycott Iowa or any other state for that matter because the only person that effects is me and I'm not about to give up the opportunity to hunt with my friends and family. I may not always be able to afford the price of a tag but that is a money issue not a choice.

I keep hearing about all the guys from Missouri who are complaining about the increase. Dont know of any myself.
I have to wonder how many big racks from Missouri are hanging on walls and in barns in Iowa compared to those from Iowa hanging in Missouri. Not even close. A lot of Iowans cut their deer hunting teeth in Northern Missouri before Iowa had a season. And a vastly larger number come here for rifle season now. Fact is, the impact of non residents in Iowa is very small. I would be surprised if there werent more Trophy deer killed in Iowa, by Iowans, and checked in as rifle kills in Missouri than are legally taken by non residents in Iowa from all the other States combined. I have seen compelling evidence of this.
Iowa has a great Trophy deer resource as a result of good management practices, and I and others are willing to pay a premium to enjoy it.
I feel that those from Iowa who want to enjoy liberal bag limits and a chance to hunt with their rifles should be able to pay half of what I do in Iowa IF I am lucky enough to draw.

I think these politicians are gonna mess around and screw up hunting for a lot of people. There were a lot of us in Iowa that thought doubling the non resident licenses was a crock.Shouldnt be long before the tags in other states get so high that the majority of us cant afford to leave our own state to hunt. But at least we charge everyone the same all the way across the board, picking out a couple of states because you dont like their prices seems kinda childish to me.

Mn slick, last year I caught and released more than 300 lbs of flatheads up there.I fish there on the Mn river and keep the first 2 I catch every year, after that they all go back in.So the next time you see a truckload of guys coming down here to pheasant hunt ask em to just shoot 2 and take pictures of the rest ok.Id appreciate it and the public land would be a lot less crowded without 4 minnesota trucks in every driveway. Thanks

I agree with Horst on the politician thing. Fact is these hunting videos that we all like to watch (I also get the hunting channel) so much is to blame for allot of that. It wasn't until the big names in hunting started promoting Iowa as one of the states for a possible world record whitetail that prices went up. As soon as the state legislation realized they had a market the dollar signs popped up in their eyes. That isn't a bad thing if I thought the Iowa DNR got all that money from the increase, but they probably don't. What does bother me is that most of those hunts on the videos are canned hunts. It's kind of like false advertisement. That or I suck (possible), because it's never like the video in my zone and I've archery hunted it for going on 13 years. I'm not saying I've never seen record class bucks because I've seen plenty. I've just never seen them the first time in a stand I never hung in a place I've never been. I hate to think that hunting will be ruined by the pro's like all the other sports but it would look that way. I'm one of the lucky ones that hunts private property due to a father in-law in Zone 4. Allot of farms around him will let you hunt on them for a little of the green stuff in your pocket and they get it. I don't blame the farmers because I would do the same thing to supplement my income if I farmed in Iowa but that green stuff is going to mess things up for all of us, not just the out of staters.

From one Yank to another, hello Rackaddict.

Cost of licenses have always been a hot issue. I guess my philosophy is you either pay it to hunt if your from out of state or you don't. It's you money and you can do what ever you want with it. It would be nice if the non resident fee was cheeper but it is not! I would hope that the increased fee's are to help the Iowa DNR budget maintain some efficiency to operate. The issue is money. Most out of state hunters who are serious about hunting have 10 times the amount of there license wrapped up in equipment they use! I wished alot of the things that make the world go round were cheaper than what they are but they are not and they even keep going up in price. There were alot of things I would have like to have had as a kid growing up but my parents could not afford it. I always did have what I needed though. A place to live, food, clothes, and people who cared about me. Do I sound to old fashioned? Do you maybe think alot of people are just plain spoiled these days and are use to getting everything they want and if they can't have it there way they get upset! Oh well just my 2 cents worth. As my dad always said if you don't have the money and can't afford it, you can't have it son! Put it back on the shelf. When you get a job and make your own money then maybe you can have it someday. Don't always get what you want!

I agree, Trpr. The non-residence license is usually a small expence in a serious hunter's budget. The only problem I have with sky rocketing non-residence fees is, that I believe we short change the kids. I remember when the New Mexico non-residence deer license was $15.00 plus $2.00 tag(1960s). Took my son several times and he had a great time in the mountains. I would have a tough time taking my gransons now with the price of the license. (Probably would do it somehow though)!!!!

When you buy boots or a bow or whatever, you are paying for materials, labor, marketing, etc. that were incurred by the manufacturer of the products. Mother Nature (or God-insert whatever being you hold responsible) and farmers produce the deer in Iowa, and they aren't the ones who control the license fees. JMO. Jay

I agree with both of you, Don W and Deerhunter. It is a shame that our sport is becoming overpriced for our future generations. I also feel that we should have some say in what the fee's for licensing should be. I wish I could say I knew why the state raised the fee's for non residents. We have those in our state legislature that don't have a clue as to what is going on with our resources as well as the management of the state budget. Our DNR I believe does a tremendous job with what they are given to work with. Big money is starting to do the talking for those of us who don't have it! Just take a look at the example with the Riverton Wildlife area in Southwest Iowa. Politics shut down the North section of the hunting refuge because those who have pay hunting clubs in and around the refuge weren't doing as well as the hunters on some of the the pay area's that we the public have had acess to for many years. Now we don't have that area to hunt anymore. They have closed all the pay blinds. The head honcho decided to shut the North section down to provide more of a refuge area for the birds! HA! He shut it down because those with the hunting clubs were complaining that the public area's were effecting there hunting sucess. It is hard to understand how we let this happen. There is now no acess even to handicapped hunters in the area as there was before. There argument will be that they only catered to a few handicapped hunters anyway so it won't really affect anything. Greed, politics, and money! In the future if you don't have it you won't get it! It really is a sad situation. Why did this happen? Can't get a straight logical answer. The DNR guys out in the field that I have talked to don't even agree with this decision. What does that tell you! JMO.
