Mock scrapes

Last season I tried making a few mock scrapes, but noticed the bucks didn't even care for them.
I started out find a good location not to far from an actually scrape. I mad sure there was a branch hanging over it. I tried not to leave any of my own odors behind, or any thing that would disturb a deer.
I used a buck gel, and put a dab in the middle of the scrape, and on the licking brantch.
I checked it frequently, and made it look like I was working it.
But there was no signs of deer even carring for it.
What are some other tricks to do? Or what am I doing wrong? Is there a different gel to use, or deer pellets, I should try?
Should I work other deer scrapes to make it look like im a competitive buck?
Thanks and good hunting

Jason, I have had little luck without making an actual "scrape line" with multiple scrapes, like one every 15 to 20 yards and as many as 4 or 5. Also, try stealing a licking branch from another tree (preferably from your buddies honey hole

) and move it to your spot and wire it on. This way you know you have the real thing up top anyway. I have read that deer prefer certain species of trees to use as licking branches. I figure that getting one that they have selected there self gives me an edge. Good Luck!

Stole the words right out of my mouth. Guess I just wasn't quick enough.
One thing I've read you can do is turn a film container into a sort of scent bomb. Put your scent inside ,poke some holes in the lid and bury it in your scrape. Also, be sure the deer feel secure coming to your mock scrape during shooting hours.
Whitetail Hunting Strategies has a nice little column on mock scrapes, if you can find the September issue.
