mock scrapes

I've tried making mock scrapes, but never seem to have deer work them. I use a gel that is ment for scrapes.
I use the the gel on the actuall scrape, and on the licking branch, should I use something different for the branch, or try other type of scrape sents altogether? How do u guys get deer to work your scrapes?

I don't use anything in mine except sometimes I mark them myself. I do work the ground alot and try to remove a lot of the vegetation. The easiest way is to back a bush hog up to an overhanging branch and drop it as low as it will go. Often there is not an appropriate branch so I'll pull one down and tie it at the proper height, pull over a small tree so the top works or even take a branch from another tree and wire it in place. For me the key is putting the mock scrape in a place they want to use anyway. I really like them near my stands so I get lots of time to tape/study/shoot bucks passing by.

old buck i thought i was the only one that takes a whiz in a scrape.
a few years back i was in a ground blind and coulnt hold it no longer,i went back behind me 20 yards and relived my self,wouldnt you know it the next time i was there the same thing happened,i went back to the same spot to whiz and there was a half way decent scrape going with fresh deer prints in it.
Did some reading up on it and found out that pee is pee once it soaks in the ground and sits for a spell,gives off a ammonua smell that all pee does.
Either that or i have a very special pee.

I will bottle it and sell it to anyone for $10 a oz.If you want a gallon or two it may take me awhile

Normally I carry a bottle which if handy I empty into a scrape when leaving.

Years ago I had something happen similar to what you experienced. I really had to go and didn't carry a bottle. I got down and went about 25 yards, dug a hole, did my thing, then covered it. Later that same day a nice 8 pt came by smelled the spot, calmly gathered his legs together over the spot and added his urine dribbling it over his hock glands, then wandered off. That was my first hint that it might not be such a big alarm factor.

By the way, if anyone is interested, I could supply some genuine urine from a real 'Old Buck'. Of course it would cost you!

i always "freshen" scrapes in my area with my own origional aroma. have had scrapes turn active overnight this way.

Old Buck, maybe THAT should be your next print . . . a painting of you freshening a scrape, while the younger buck stands off to the side. You could name it "Nature's Call".

We have had a stand in a split tree for a couple of years now. My dad is getting older and seems to have developed a bladder control problem. When he feels the urge he looks around and then begins to relieve himself on the other main trunk. Before he can get everything back in place he usually sees deer.

Maybe it works as a cover scent or as an attractant. That or all those pictures you see with the hunter doing his business, gun leaning against a tree, and the big buck watching are actually how it happens. Hmmmmm.....

We need to change this post to where do you pee in the woods. I like you all have had similar experiences with my homemade brew. Had deer tear up the area overnight. Made a beleiver out of me.

I'm skeptical about peein in a scrape, but I think I'm going to have to try it. Ok if I do it, should I make a scrape fairly close to my stand so I can observe it??

Not sure how a mock scrape that is out of your sight will do you any good. Unless you just want to see deer on a game cam.

My recommendation - if you make a mock scrape have it within shooting range of your stand or else where deer can scent check it and lure them by your stand.

Also as you have read you don't need to be worried about peeing in the timber or on a scrape. It just freshens it up a bit is all.

Oh my god!! I can't believe I'm reading this I always wanted to tell everyone that a couple of years ago I just had to relieve myself and I went in a small scrape and the very next morning it was as big as a car hood. I couldn't believe it and I wasn't about to tell anyone about it or they would laugh me out of the timber. I see there are hunters just as crazy as me and tried it and look at the results. I guess I will try it whenever I have to if you guys believe it.
I just got back from bear hunting and I can't tell you if bears sh#$@!~%%t in the woods but I guess you guys myself included do pee in the woods.
