Monday Morning Success

DOUBLE LUNG

Active Member
I finally harvest a turkey on monday morning. It was a tough season. Them boss gobblers just wouldn't come into the call and after being on the ground for about a half hour to an hour they would shut up. I did take a shot and a decent gobbler on saturday morning. Houston and I had these bird figured out but they just would come close enough. So yesterday I was sitting and nothing was comming in so i was going to move and after I had the double bull all rapped up and ready to put it in the bag. I hear this guy making noise and coming my way.
So i drop everything right there and sit next to some bushes I was next to. I called him in and at thirty yards he was on the ground. I was hoping to get a gobbler be yesterday was my last and I was back to work. So I put him down. Either way it sure beats working. Was anyone else having problems with them coming to calls. They weren't showing any interest in the hens either. I am wondering if the peak of the breeding season is over.

Nice bird!
I hunted my last morning this A.M. I have had the same problems as you with call shy birds. Opening day we had 3 gobbling on the roost in 100 acres of timber. The past 3 days I've heard 1 lone gobble. Five days of hunting I saw 1 tom!!!!! I didn't even use a call the past two days. These things are smarter than I give them credit for.

Way to finish the deal. I am still trying. I too had a frustrating weekend. Four different toms and none acted intrested in decoys or calling. Actually had one big tom at 50 yards for over two hours feeding on alfalfa. He never strutted or gobbled once!! He would barely even stop eating long enough to look my way when I called to him. The two hens he had with him came right in "wouldn't you know". I had never been so frustrated while turkey hunting. I guess eleven hours in a blind will do that!

Congrats!

I've hunted a few days now with no birds coming in. Had some nice set ups to.

Henned up has been an understatement thus far. It will change, just a matter of getting a bird in the right mood. I love it when they come running in like it's the first hen they've ever seen or heard

The gobblers here are henned up pretty bad early in the morning. Makes it hard to call 'em in.
