Monster Shot

I went to my shotgun ground tonight north of Mount Carrol Illinois to hang a stand for next weekends shotgun season. As I was driving in throught the pasture I drove within 50 yards of a monster buck. I decide to drive over the hill about 150 yards and hag my stand. I then stayed to bowhunt it. At 4:10 PM I reattled in this monster and shot him at 8 yards. The arrow hit high right by the spine. The arrow only penetrated about 5 inches. Before I left I found my arrow about 70 yards from where I shot him. The arrow was broke off right where the broadhead screws into the shaft. I had very little blood so I decided to leave and go back and look for him at first light tomorrow. Does anyone think it's possible to hit a deer in the spine without breaking it? I just can't understand why the arrow didn't penetrate more? It was a quartered away shot and I was no where close to the shoulder.

Good luck with your tracking tomorrow. Sounds like you either hit the deer just above or just below the spine. If it was hit above the spine (unlikely based on the angle of the 8 yards shot) the buck will be fine. If the arrow connected below the spine it is likely a one lung hit - you are doing the right thing by giving him the night to expire.

check out this post out - lots of bone by the spine.

Again goodluck to you!

Good luck finding your deer.I lost one in late October,we think that the coyotes jumped him off his death bed and run him through a river bottom,we never did find him, lost all sign after 400 yd's or so.
Good Luck and let us know what happen's.

Hey Tadca so you say it is bigger than my biggest one, well hope you get it. I talked to one of my bosses this morning at work and he was talking about his boy shot a deer down next to the spine and only got 5" of penetration. It went 50 yds then he heard it go down. I then told him about your hunt and I got thinking that you might have a good chance of finding it this morning. So if you get it your gonna have to bring it down and show us after all I brought my biggest deer up to show you, its only fair. Good luck this AM.

I killed a 3 1/2 year old a few years back here in WI that had a broadhead lodged right in the spine above the shoulder!!!!! I was slicing out the back straps and I hit it with my knife!! Deer are tough critters ... A bud of mine shot a decnt buck with his bow a few years back and lost it but found half the arrow... Then not the following rifle season but the next years rifle season the buck was shot by his dad and the other half of the arrow was lodged in the opposite rib cage!!!! he got one lung only and the deer recovered and was killed 13 mounths later They have it mounted with the matching halves of the arrow with it.....

Deer are tough.

Well I found him. I'm glad I waited until this morning. He went atleast a 1/4 of a mile. I found him in a creek bed the next draw over from where I shot him. He wasn't as big as I thought (Ground Shrinkage I guess) anyway I initialy thought he was a Booney book buck. But he turned out to be a 150 class buck. Maybe not as big as bohuner3's biggest but I'm closing in on him. And I'm still a step ahead of his brother. He is a personal best for me. ""I'm not having any luck trying to figure out how to post the picture. I'll post one as soon as I figure it out.""

Congrats
I thought 150 class buck was a B&C. You don't seem very excited Id be jumping around like a monkey if I shot a booner.

Don't get me wrong I am very excited!! I thought it took 170 inches to make boone, but maybe I'm wrong.

I still can't figure out how to attache a picture. Can anyone tell me how this works?

Congratulations, it is hard to be patient when you have a situation like you went through.Like most injured deer he went to lower ground, aka the creek.Always a good place to look.Job well done!!

Great Buck !! congrats on the harvest and smart move to wait overnight (a very hard thing to do with a great deer)
