Muddys got me going now! My brother and I take our flathead fishing almost as serious as our bowhunting. We pretty much live on the river when their not on the nest.We haven't got to do much this year due to the rivers here being to high to fish safely.Right now their on the nest but soon as they come off were ready. Here's just a few from last year!

WOW, nice fish. What's the biggest one you guys have ever caught? My cousin landed a 44 pounder early this year on a bank pole. I'll try to post a pic if I can remember how.

My hats off to you for letting the monsters go, most guys wouldn't do that. What is your favorite type of bait for big flatheads?

We have 2 bait ponds we raise carp in. A 10" to 12" carp is hard to beat. Big goldfish and bullheads are also good.Medium size baits in the spring and the bigger the better in the late summer to fall when the gar are out in full force.

Carp huh? I'll have to try that. We mainly use bullheads and sometimes sunfish. I have heard of guys catching them on 9 or 10" bass, but I'm not sure if those are "legal" to use for bait in the rivers. I would think a carp would last longer on a hook anyway. Do you hook them between the dorsal fin and the tail?

Carp, that's about the only good thing I've ever heard them used for, except as coon bait in the fall. Speaking of such, that brings up a funny memory from a few years ago. We had a flathead in a holding tank at the station, we would use him as the "grand finale" in our fish talks to youth groups. The day after we stuck him in the tank he yacked up a 24 inch buffalo fish, I about laught my a$$ off.

Unfortunatly using live carp for bait in Iowa is illegal.Wish it werent but the DNR fella told me they were.
I know of a person that used them a few years back and got a lot of nice flatheads, said they are some killer bait.
The DNR came down river when he was checking his poles one time.He dont use carp no more

Pat, what rivers do you fish the most??? I am not much of a river fisherman, however, I love catching cats in some of the area lakes!!!

Those are some big a$$ cats!!!!

Mark...

You know, after thinking about this for a while I realized that I never catch a carp while rod and reeling thats under 2 or three pounds. Could this mean that the big cats are eating all the smaller ones? I don't know why they would be illegal in Iowa for bait, most guys just throw them on the bank around here.

Skully, Yes we use 16/0 mustad circle hooks between the dorsil and the tail. Mark, We fish several different rivers. Mainly the Neosho and the verdigris. We fish the Marais Des Cygnes once or twice a year. We've also caught some dandies in the Osage pretty close to where you duck hunt up by four rivers. Here the last 3 weekends we have been going down to Grand lake in Oklahoma and doing some noodling while their on the nest. We've grabbed a few but mostly small males. The biggest was the weekend before last I grabbed a #35. Pretty good rush!

NOODLING!!!! Pat you have just confirmed that your are one crazy SOB!!! That takes BALLS!!!

Have you ever had any run-ins with anything other than a Catfish while Noodling??? I have heard some flat out crazy stories about big turtles and pissed off animals......

I think I will stick to a rod and reel out of a boat!!!!

Did that 35 pounder tear your arm up???

Mark....

Carp?? I have never used carp for anything. Just to catch them and throw them on the bank. We mostly use bluegill for are cat fishing. And sometimes some buffalo blood.( Buy buffalo blood and put something in it and it turns into jelly, Then add some cianamin (sp) Works great. Couple weeks ago we were fishing in a canal/lake and i was useing a chub. Bout 10 minutes later my pole bent like hell. Jerked it and started to real (sp) it in. Right before it got up to the boat about brought me in with it. Got right up to the boat again them the hook came out of him mouth. That had to be the biggest fish i have ever almost had. Just thought i would tell my storie. Great fish. And yet thats another reason i wont swim in the canal!

Mark,Youre better doodlers are usually crazy or drunk. I usually have a couple beverages to get my game face on. I've never ran into anything besides catfish in our holes. People are always worried about turtles and snakes. They don't bother me near as bad as the thought of grabbing a beaver. One thing to rememember is if the hole goes up its a beaver. If the hole drops down its a catfish.Keep you're thumb on the bottom so when they bite youre hand they only take you're fingers. Grab that jaw and hold on! No, That #35 never tore me up. Like I said,I'm not crazy...........I wear leather gloves.
