Mulching jobs

One thing to keep in mind…. A drum mulcher runs about 3x slower than a disc. So- if hire out drum… should cost less. In theory at least.
I’ve ran a lot of machines with best drums (tuned to machine with new teeth) vs discs and im Probably closer to 4x faster with a disc mulcher.
$130/hour is a steal if they have good machinery &
Do a nice job. 100% id look into that one as price is very attractive.

What’s goal of the job? Disc wins in 90% of scenarios IMO. Throws bigger chunks all over is maybe a downside but u can back drag them to grind up. Drum is smaller chips but it also makes that area full of mulch so things don’t grow. Drum speed vs disc speed is a huge difference, like I said, so just keep the in mind. If a guys disc was 3x faster than a drum but he was twice the price per hour- obviously the 3x faster at double the cost is better value IF you could somehow compare apples to apples.
I’ll put it another way…. 40 GPM or more on a disc with sharp teeth & a good operator…. Gonna smoke the amount of work that can be done a level or 2 down from that or going to any drum.

Thanks Skip.
The goal would be to clean up some of the tree trash and wood piles in timber that's on the ground and mulch travel cooridoors and burn breaks so I can eventually burn. I feel like the fire could get out of control if I burn now.

Also mulch a new kill plot.

I just got a quote from a guy for a drum mulcher @100 hr. Sounded pretty good deal but like you said could be 3x slower so it just depends

Man- that’s really low cost!!! I’d also say this on other side of it…. Running a high end disc with crazy flow- u running around a $150k+ unit @ new prices… if a guy got hired out to use that, it would be crazy to do it for under about $300 an hour. So- $100/hour for a drum…. That makes pretty good sense. I think the guys who will do it for $100-130 are even a bit nuts. Fuel, breaking things & maintaining machine + a drum mulcher are expensive! U doing really well with these prices & probably the way to go.

Hiring a dozer is almost always cheaper for any quantity of tree clearing imo. They all come with their own set of "after" problems, whether it be chips, mulch, berms of dirt/trees, stumps (if shearing/brush hogging), decks (if pulling), etc. I always lean towards a dozer for cost effectiveness. .02

When did you have yours done
Is 250 a hour too expensive for diamond drum mulcher?
I had my work done about 1.5 years ago. It was part of an EQIP funded project. If memory serves me he worked about 1.5 days and bill was $1,600. He had a brand new Deere 333G (I think that was the letter) and did use a drum mulched. He had both drum and disc. At the time I was interested in buying one so asked him if he only had one which would he buy - he responded with drum mulcher. I had a hillside that had primarily 3-5” trees growing about 2’ apart, it was a tangled mess and looked great after his job of backdragging and tilling the mulch into the soil.
