Mulching Seedlings

Land of the Whitetail
My first tree planting this spring is doing really well. Yesterday after turkey hunting I checked on most of my seedlings. 75 swamp white oak, 25 plum, and 25 white pine. Nearly everything is doing well, just one plum not leafed out and although I didnt check every oak I'd bet 95% + are leafing out. All were tubed and staked. I'm wondering if it would be worth the time/effort to put some mulch down around them. I'd think a pick up load and a wheel barrow I'd be able to get them all mulched in a couple hours time. I'm really happy with how they are doing right now, but with all the grass coming up around them etc. wondering if putting down some mulch would be worth the work.

Take the time to spray. Mulch is a depends who you talk to option. I say no mulch because it likes to introduce bugs and other pests and even bacteria. And eventually breaks down. Only benefit, seems to slow down drying out of ground but that can create too much moisture all the time.

What is recommended to spray?

Since using saplings get a PVC pipe to slide over to protect, go out about 1' from saplings to start and just use a glyphosate is what I use. Then if you have the resources... use a pre-emergent granular (preen is normally what I use) But just keeping the competitive grasses down will greatly help sapling survival.

they are tubed, so that should protect from spraying?
