Muzzleloaders

I am considering purchasing a muzzleloader. I have no experience muzzleloading and would like to buy a quality product that will perform well. What products would you recommend?

There are many quality ML on the market today. Try to handle and shoot a few if you can before you purchase one.

Then think about service......did I mention that there is a ML shop in Centerville, Ia that has service second to none in the industry.

They are also a sponsor of Iowawhitetail.

There's lot's of quality ML's to choose from now. Two of the top brands are Knight and Thompson Center. Decide 1st if you want to go with an inline or traditional, then go shopping and see whats out there. Personally, I started with a traditional gun then switched to an inline. I own two Knights and gave my kids CVA Optima's. The Knight's are at the top of the list for quality but I think the Optima's are a very nice gun for the money too.

Be prepared to spend more effort and time shooting ML's. They are more work no matter what kind of powder you buy and they can be fussy trying to get them zeroed in. But on the other hand they are alot of fun too. Just the fact that knowing you will probably have only one shot at whatever you are shooting at has made me a better shot with other guns.

Blake is right on with Centerville. That's Knight's home. Outstanding service dept. A couple seasons ago I had a Ram rod end come apart on me from a gun that's 6 years old. I called them to order a new one and had it the next day and no charge. I'll stick with the Knight's.

PS. Check out the Knight Revolution

A CVA Optima 209 Mag kit for about $250 would be a good one to start out with. You get everything but the powder to start shooting. That break action is so easy to clean. I like mine alot.

I would highly recommend a Knight. I have owned a single Knight rifle for about 10 years now and it keeps puttin' em down. I recently put a 209 conversion kit in and switched to Triple 7 powder.....I would HIGHLY recommend using this powder. Clean up is much easier. The customer service down at Centerville is absolutely awesome.

Knights aren't the only good rifle out there.
My Dad shoots a traditional side-hammer TC Hawken and it shoots just as well as my Knight. He even uses loose Triple 7 powder and the same sabots as I do in my inline and lemme tell ya....I have seen some incredible shots he has taken! A great gun, but it weighs a ton. Both of our guns are topped with scopes.

Like some have said, there are many good brands and companies out there. I am sure whatever gun you choose with work for you. Just take the time to work up the best load and bullet combination and have fun!

I bought a Savage ML10II and haven't looked back. In case you haven't heard, they are factory approved for use with smokeless powder. No more cleaning all the black powder/BP substitute residue! You still can shoot BP and BP subs if you like or if the regulations in your state call for them. Check your state regs to see if in lines, scopes, smokeless powders, etc. are legal before purchasing any muzzleloader.

CVA optima

got it for christmas. shot 3 shots inside a paper plate at 150 yards with open sites right out of the box. shooting 100 gr pyrodex and powerbelts. and its only $200!!

I have a knight DISC that is about 4 years old now. Great ML and their support is great if you have any questions on the gun.

I have to say for the price I don't know if you can beat a CVA Optima. If you shop around you can probably pick one up with accessories for $300, including scope. I have had mine for two years, absolutely love it and it is deadly out to 200 yards. I too would recommend shooting Triple 7 pellets because they burn fast, don't leave behind much residue and your gun will be easy to clean (10 minutes with the inline).

You can pick up a knight wolverine 45 caliber for 170 bucks on the knight rifles website under internet specials. I have the same gun in 50 caliber, they are great guns. There are many brands out there and im sure everyone of them performs pretty much the same, it will be all your personal preference. My preference is knight, goodluck finding a muzzleloader.

I'll put a T/C Encore or Omega up against any other muzzleloader! Unbelievable accuracy and reliablity!
