muzzy bullets, bigger better?

I just noticed that the bullets I'm shooting out of my muzzy are only 240 grain. They perform great and accuracy is no problem so I'm not sure why I'm even asking this. I shoot the 240's because that's what was recommended by a salesman and to be honest I can't complain.

Anyway, is 240 grains pretty common or should I consider getting heavier bullets? I have always been a "don't fix it if it ain't broke" type of guy but really know nothing about bullets. I only have about a dozen bullets left so before I go buy three boxes of what is working I figured I'd ask to see if I should upsize.

240 grain bullet seems great for whitetails, what about bigger game like elk or bear or moose? As long as the shot is in the ribs I doubt it matters, but what about those "what if" situations?

Thanks in advance.

I'm shooting 200 grains though my .45 with 150 grains of powder! It will drop a deer in it's tracks! 240 grains is plenty with a .50!

I agree with Blaster, got my first MZ from him and shot 250 grains Barnes with 100 grain 777 pellets...deadly on whitetails! We shot 250 grain bullets and that is plenty, I'd say about middle of the road compared to most. Some shoot 200 grains, some 290 grains.

One thing I'd like to try next year is shooting loose powder vs. pellets, hoping to tighten that group down! Also 100, 120, and other various powder combos.

I've hunted many years with either 240 or 220 grains in my muzz. I've settled the last several years on the 220 grain. Pushing it with 150 gr of powder.

I've killed bears, elk, moose, and probably 50 whitetails with it. The moose was taken head on in the chest, the bullet traveled the complete length of the body and I found the lead lodged under the skin when I was skinning the hind quarters. The bull took 3 steps and tipped over.

When hunting with friends I've seen the 220 and 240 do just as much as the bigger and heavier bullets.

I agree. I'm going to buy Scheels out of the bullets they have in stock. No worries for several years that way. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Muddy,
I used to shoot 300 Barnes and eventually migrated to the 240/250 range. 100 grains 777 and they are tack drivers and deer killers. I won't go back to the heavier bullets for whitetails anyway.

just like arrows, heavier = slower flight, more drop.

240 is all i have ever used, and never had an issue. even put a shot through the shoulder blade. devastating results

Best move you could make! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

I am no smart guy with guns but doesn't things like ballistic coefficient cause heavy bullets to fly flatter in some cases? Just asking, thought I read that recently, but at longer distances the limiting factor is me and not the bullet!!

Good words to save money by.

I have been shooting 100 grains of loose 777, and the Barnes 250 grain MZ expanders loyally with the below continuous results at 100 yards. That's why my hunting bow is 17 years old. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

That is my exact setup other than I use pellets to get the 100 grains. They're like darts.
