Yes I finally did it!!
I finally got permission to hunt some private ground. It turned out to be one of the nicest places I have ever hunted. Had a good idea where I wanted to set up so I went out before dark . The turkeys were going nuts. I was surrounded. First I had 4 hens with 2 toms chasing them all over the place but wouldn't come check out my decoys. I did a bunch of calling on my homemade call but I couldn't seem to get there attention. All of a sudden the took off running did a huge circle around me and got in some timber. I cussed my call thinking it must be a piece of crap.
About an hour of silence went by when I saw a jake heading my way. I did some soft purrs and he took off in the other direction. I cussed it some more. I heard some gobbles in the timber behind me so I stood up and turned my blind. Only to spook a jake standing 10 yards behind me. He took off and I did a few purrs he turned around and came within 20 yards and hung out for a good half hour. I did some loud calling. The jake didn't even spook. I decided it was time to take him because I have never been able to get a spring turkey with a bow yet. Just as I was about to to draw back a Tom in full strut came around the blind at 10 yards. It was the most awesome thing ever. The Jake took off and he put on the most awesome display for my decoys that I have ever seen. He was turning and making clicking noises. I started to drawback and my arrow came off the string. AHHHHHHH! it clanked on my bow I thought I was done for. All his feathers dropped for a second then back to full strut. He was too worried about the babes to worry about all the noise in the blind. I pulld back again and let it fly.
He took off running and I thought he was going to go down. I freaked out when he made it to the timber. I took off after him hoping I could see where he went. Then he pulled a fast one on me. Some how I started chasing a hen. I searched for an hour. I couldn't find him. So I went to town to get some help.
When we got back we headed down a fenceline. We found him on the way in. Some how he circled around me. You never heard so much hooting!!! Made it even better that I think he came to my call. 9 1/2" beard and 1 inch spurs. Not sure of the wieght.
