My First Ever Turkey

HUSKERBUCK

PMA Member
This may get kinda long so bear with me as I am kinda excited. In my area of southeast Nebraska turkeys have only started to move into the area in the last couple of years. Last year we saw only about eight. This year we have seen as many as 51 in a flock. A couple of weeks ago I at the proding of a landowner I purchased a turkey permit. Now remember, what I know about turkeys would fit into a shoe. Any information, make that ALL information that I know about turkeys has come from this website. Well, I then went out and found what I thought was a pretty good place to set up on the ground. Went hunting 3 times before this morning and saw turkeys every time. Even had a hen walk about 7 yards from me one evening. Anyway, this morning I got settled in about 5:30am. Almost right away I could hear a hen clucking behind me. About 6:00 I thought I heard a couple of birds flydown from behind me. I waited a couple of minutes and made a couple of yelps on my box call. THREE different turkeys started gobbleing behind me. One I could tell was fairly close. I would call just once about every ten minutes and they would respond back every time. That was the coolest part for a turkey rookie such as myself. About 6:20 a hen appeared about 15 yards to my left, she stayed around for about five minutes and went back into the trees. I hit my box call and the one turkeys that was close gobbled again I guessed about 30 yards to my right behind a cedar tree. Sure enough in a couple of minutes here came a jake and a hen. This being my first ever year of turkey hunting I was not going to be picky. Once I saw the red head and the beard I knew I would take a shot if it presented itself. The jake worked his way to me and stopped and streached out his neck. BIG mistake. I introduced him to my model 1100 and #6 double mags at 26 yards. He dropped on the spot. I ran out and grabbed him and looked at my watch it was 6:33 a.m. and I was finished with my first ever year of turkey hunting. He's not a monster but good enough for me. He weighed 17 lbs and had a 4 inch beard and his spurs measured in at a whopping 1/4 inch.

Always glad to see a fellow Nebraskan having a successful turkey season. I have a feeling that this is just the beginning of a long string of turkey hunts for ya. Now that you've taken a turkey there's no going back. Welcome to yet another healthy addiction!

Way to go, Huskerbuck!!

Guess it gives me something else to do in the spring besides catch slab crappie, walleye, and largemouth bass.
