Sunday night Live4rut and I went to my family farm to locate some toms to hunt the next morning. We spotted two toms out in the field, we sat and watched them to see where they went in the woods. At about 5:30 Monday we were set up on that spot out in the plowed corn field. At first light 3 jakes flew in, I had my bow ready but they just hung out at 50 or so yards. At 6:45 two toms came in and ran the jakes off then headed for our setup (just like Mike said they would) at 20 yards I took the shot. He took flight and I watched him and my arrow head over the trees and down to the creek bottom. After an hour or so with no other bird sightings we decided to go look but had no luck. That sucked but it is also a part of hunting, I just call that lesson number one.
We hunted the rest of the day in the rain with very little action, we did see one tom in the woods but could not get him in for a shot. I was hoping he would have so Mike could show me how it is supposed to be done.
The next day I was on my own but I bet Mike wishes he would have been there because I could hear 4 to 5 gobblers at day light. Boy was my heart pumping but I could not get them out in the field, I tried everything but I’m not a master caller like my buddy. I also heard a bunch a crows down in the valley that got me thinking about the turkey I shot the day before. At 9:30 the woods had been quiet for sometime so I packed up and headed for the crow sounds. When I got to the bottom there he was, boy was I pumped the first thing I did was call Mike. I was happy but also sad, sad that I could not keep the meat and sad that my lucky $40+ arrow/broadhead/ lighted nock was not there. Its lucky because it’s the same arrow I used to shoot my first wall hanger with. I hung up the phone put the tag on his leg and threw him over my back I took 5 steps and almost stepped on my arrow. Now it is really lucky, I shot my pope and young buck and my very first turkey with it.
Thanks for the hunt Mike we will have to do it again.
