My Other Future Hunting Buddy

AZHunter

Iowa Boy At Heart
My son, Jacob, has shown a great deal of interest in archery and wanting to learn to shoot a bow after watching me and his big sister shoot regularly. He'll be 3 in December (Christmas present), but my wife and I decided to go ahead and let him have his sister's old bow (the reason its purple...for now) earlier than we originally planned. I started out helping him off and on beginning back in June and recently, that's all he can talk about and who am I to discourage a budding love of archery? He's now gotten to where he doesn't want my help, although sometimes I have to force my help on him ("No, I do it, daddy!"). My favorite is when I'm gone and my wife helps him and he says "This is how you do it, mom!". Last weekend, before returning back to Alabama to work on the oil spill damage assessment again, we got out in the back yard to do a little shooting. I'd shoot a few arrows and then he would, as would his sister. We egged her on and got her sticking the target with her Bear Archery compound from 15 yards. She was EXCITED! Not to be outdone, Jacob grabbed his bow and began shooting on his own, consistently hitting close to the bullseye and giggling everytime we cheered. He started to wear out a little so I had to help him hold his bow steady to keep hitting the target. I'm constantly amazed at how strong he is for his age and how much farther along he is than his sister at that age. She uses that as her motivation to not be outdone by her little brother, though, so it works out. When I get back from Alabama, I'm going to sand the limbs down and repaint them "not purple" so it will be his bow. My wife and I are talking about getting our daughter a Diamond Nuclear Ice this spring for her 7th birthday and how he may be ready for one of those by his 5th birthday/Christmas. I can't wait to get back and keep at it with those two!

Thanks for indulging a proud father that can't wait for the days to be out hunting with his kids! :way:

Great photos Brian and memories that will last a life time. It might just fuel the fire for a hunting passion that will keep him out of the other things that get kids in trouble later in life. I know it did for me!

You'll never regreat taking the time out of your busy day for things like that!:way:
