just called to get a n.r. doe tag to do my part and they informed me it would cost 159.00.
it looks like the iowa dnr dont want the n.r. help in taking does as i cant spend that much on a doe tag.
thats one thing the m.i. dnr does right in keeping doe tag low so hunters will buy them.

maybe iam cheap Randy

Drop down to Missouri and you can have 2 Turkeys and 2 Deer on 1 tag for less than the cost of a doe tag in Iowa. Northern Missouri is loaded with deer, especially the bald ones.

$159! plus non resident small game, plus habitat stamp and that doe tag has cost you $250. I agree that the price of a deer has gotten out of hand. For about 50 pounds of meat, you pay $5 a pound for deer. I'd take the $250 and go to the meat locker and buy beef tenderloin, take it home and watch Jackie Bushman's Buckmasters on TNN.

I think the Iowa DNR treats non residents like the rotten red headed step children. I wish other states would have reciprocity laws and charge Iowa residents the same. Maybe then, the beaurocrats in Iowa who might hunt out of state would see how it feels. Thanks again Gov. Vilsack.

Well, I don't mean to bash Iowa (since I was born and raised there for 30+ years), but I have to agree with Hawkeye68! The best thing other states could do would be enact the reciprocal rates. (Of course the politicials couldn't care less) I think Kansas charges $10.50 for their doe tags.

1. Prices too high. I agree.
2. Iowa DNR treats non residents like the rotten red headed step children. I disagree. The DNR didn't do this. Neither did the resident hunters. You can thank the state government for that one.
3. Reciprocity laws? It depends on the motive. "You can't hunt in my state if I can't in yours." Usually a good law. Or, "I charge you as much as you charge me." Good sometimes, bad others. Where would it be bad? In states with larger numbers of deer and NR hunters, such as Missouri. They would have fewer hunters and less revenue. I don't think that is what they would be after and is probably why they changed the law the way they did this year. Those Missouri lawmakers are fair in raising the prices for certain states like they did and smart for not overdoing it like some other states have, although those states (Iowa or Illinois for example) with the high demand and low supply can get away with what they do. Maybe our lawmakers aren't so dumb after all!

I agree that Iowa has raised thier prices to much.I know I couldnt pay that much to hunt here. But I really dont see where charging Iowas hunters more money would help. Our hunters didnt make the law, the politicians did.I have never hunted out of state in my life but would like to someday. If all these states turn this into a pissing match were all gonna be the losers not them. Most of them dont hunt and the ones that do will just vote themselves a raise and buy the tags. All of us average hunters will be the ones sitting home wishing we were somewhere else hunting something else for a change.Maybe instead of fighting amongst ourselves we should all cooperate once and see if we can get some of these bad laws changed, wouldnt that be more productive?

Horst, I have been accused of being a "conspiracy theorist" before but, the reasons you stated (we'll all be at home wishing... and we're all gonna be the losers) are what make me wonder if the Anti-hunting lobby is partly responsible for increased tag fees. Think about it, it's a perfect way for them to eliminate hunters. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we all point fingers at each other.

I didnt even hesitate to buy the doe tag. It means I get to spend a week or so hunting with my brother and a couple old friends back home.Or, I could sit at home and wait for next year but that isnt any fun.I get free room and board while I am there so its pretty cheap entertainment for a couple weeks. I will probably spend that much when we all go out the first night back.

If I was living in a state with poor deer quality and no realistic chance to even see a decent buck (as when I lived in North Carolina), I'd rather travel to Iowa and hunt does and get to see some quality bucks rather than sit back in North Carolina and try to shoot a tiny six point that wouldn't weigh 100 pounds dressed if you filled him with rocks! True, the price of a deer tag (including doe tags) is a bit high in Iowa but take a look at a lot of other states with questionable quality and you'll see the price of the tag is not out of line.

Do you still lose your preference point if you select a doe tag? If that's still the case then that's the real kicker. You pay big dollars for a doe tag and ruin your chance to get an any sex tag the next year.

MN slick
Not supposed to lose your point anymore. I got burned on that one last year after having accepted an antlerless permit in 2000. All OK though, I made the draw this year.

Hunted Kansas the last 3 out of 4 years and your right thats its great to see big bucks, thats why we spend the money and time to go to these states.I expect iowa to be alot like kansas, this is my first iowa tag so I dont know. There are good states to go to if you dont draw a tag so you can buck hunt,I shot my best last year in Nebraska(150 gross 10 point). As soon as I can Iam checking out Ohio.
I dont mind spending the money to hunt bucks,I just thought this was to high for a doe tag.

I'm from Minnesota and forked out the $329.00 for a buck tag. I would have taken any tag to get back to Iowa and see all those nice bucks again. I was upset with the cost increase but there really wasn't anything I could do this year. I was suprised to see that there still is more demand for tags than tags and people are coming from all over the country to hunt Iowa. Things aren't going to change if the demand is greater than the supply. I think it's here to stay. I'm lucky I have a place to stay and hunt for no cost.

I have a few informational comments to make and a suggestion to residents.

This was the first year that both the non-resident Turkey tags AND the non-resident anysex deer tags did NOT sell out in the initial drawing. There were a couple zones with leftover anysex deer tags after the drawing. I do not know if they have sold all of them now, but I would venture to guess that they did. The non-resident tag price in conjunction with the non-resident tag supply is very close to the equilibrium point. No comment on whether that is good or bad.

Residents are now given the opportunity to purchase 2 antlerless deer tags valid in a specific county - quotas permitting - in addition to a bow and a gun anysex tag. I personally purchased 2 antlerless tags for the county I hunt in and 1 antlerless tag for a special deer management zone last year in addition to my 2 anysex tags (and I filled all of them - 4 does and 1 buck and I could have easily taken another shooter buck instead of the 4th doe). This year I purchased 2 antlerless tags again for the county I hunt in. In 2001, you had to wait a month before being given the opportunity to purchase the second county antlerless tag. Me and every hunting friend that I know was able to purchase that second antlerless tag. Why were these tags not selling as I expected they would? Does everyone want to shoot only a buck and not shoulder the responsibility to help "manage" the deer herd? In the eyes of the DNR, the public, and the politicians, isn't that our main purpose as hunters? If the residents don't want these antlerless tags, why not offer them to non-residents at the same price?

Residents, get out and buy an antlerless tag or two and harvest some does before that responsibility is taken from hunters and given to someone else.

DC, funny youd mention that, I just got back from buying both of my doe tags.On the bright side the county I wanted to hunt in was sold out so I guesse thats good for the deer population and bad for me

But I did get 2 doe tags for Palo Alto county, where there were only 50 tags available to start with.Looks like I can shoot 4 deer this year
