Omaha World-Herald
DONIPHAN, Neb. (AP) — Wildlife officials in Nebraska say a whooping crane has been spotted in central Nebraska.
Whooping cranes are listed as an endangered species and are on the verge of extinction, with only about 240 remaining that migrate through Nebraska, according to experts.
Officials say the one now being watched in Nebraska has been spotted for the past month along the Platte River near Doniphan.
Officials believe it has been separated from its parents and is traveling with sandhill cranes — a much more common and smaller breed.
