I was going through some old photos and came upon this one. The photo was taken a couple years ago where I shot both my spring birds this year. At that time there was a little discussion as to if they were Merriams or Rio's.
Our birds here are mainly hybreds, with traits of Merriams, Rio's and Easterns. The area I am fortunate to hunt has all three.
They may not be "pure" strains, but if they look like a particular breed, that's what I call them.
This photo show's just that. There's some white rumped Merriams, some buff colored Rios and even a couple of the darker Easterns in this group.
