Need advice on a Point & Shoot Dig. Camera

The camera I usually take into the field with me finally died & I was wondering what kind of camera you guys take with you into the field?

I'm looking for something that is compact, affordable enough that I'm not going to cry if/when it gets busted up from hauling it around, takes decent pictures & is quiet when it's turned on. The one we use at home 'beeps' when it's turned on & if I was going to take a picture from my stand, I don't want to spook the deer.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I can't help you on what to buy, but I can say that I'm not happy with my Nikon Coolpix S220 10Mp camera. It beeps when it is turned on, I don't like the colors of the pics (which says a lot since I'm red/green colorblind) and it misses focus too often. The only thing I can't complain about is the price, as I won it as a door prize.

Randy - my Nikon used to beep as well but I did manage to get that function turned off...as far as the other issues I can't help you but I could fix it with a hammer! :D

IowaDave - The only cameras I have are no longer manufactured but have had good luck with a Canon PowerShot and NIkon SLR. As stated the models I have are "obsolete" but can maybe get you in the right dirction.

I gotta throw a vote in for a Panasonic camera. I have used a few different brands ranging in price from $40 to $500+ I gottta say the Panasonic is easily the most user friendly.

The 'house camera' we've got now is a Cannon PowerShot A540 & I really like it. The wife is also wanting to upgrade & I think would let me have this one to use as my outdoor camera, but it beeps when it's turned on, which just isn't going to work. The manual is long lost so any idea on how to turn that off? I'm not what you call 'tech savy' when it comes to figuing stuff like that out without the directions!!

EDIT- It's nothing short of a miracle! I actually figured out how to shut all the beeps up!! Didn't even know that was an option until I read Muddy's post. Now I just gotta talk her into letting me stick it in my backpack!!

I have a brand new(6 month old) Canon Powershot SX120 10X zoom 10.0 Mega Pixel and I love it. I also own a Nikon D60 SLR that is way more costly and much larger, but isn't as easy to carry in the field. The powershot takes awesome pics, records video, and is easy to carry while in the woods. Has a self timer for posing with your kills. I had another 1 1/2 year older model Powershot that was a great camera too, but the Boone River and a canoe trip ruined it:(, and since I liked it so much, I bought another. My girlfriend has a Nikon coolpix and it isn't as good as a camera as my Powershot.

Once in awhile I am able to post something worthwhile and help a member out. Sounds like its going to cost you more now as your wife will probably want a very nice replacement! :way:

That will be awesome in 5 years as your new outdoor camera though.

Canon SX210 IS with DIGIC 4 processor
or
1DsMark III, not really

All but the cheapest models will let you shut off sound.Just have to go into menu.

How is your white balance set? That will determine your color.

Thanks for your help!
At least the new camera will come out of our funds & not my "Huntin', Fishin', Beer Buyin' and Messin' Around Fund"!! There's a BIG difference! ;)

Looked through the menus and found where to shut off the beeps and also saw that white balance is set to "Auto".

Maybe should have read the instructions......

Any of hte Canon Powershots are really good, and still pretty cheap. I have the same model that Muddy has and then an updated version of that one that I bought last year. My brother also has this camera and we really like this camera. They make some smaller versions of the powershot that are more point and shoot which are very nice.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W220 or W230. Compact; steady-shot; 12.1 megapixels; 4X zoom; and most of all affordable! I use a Canon D10 with various lenses extensively, but in the field the Sony W220 is a great camera that you don't have to worry about destroying.

I would highly recommend the Panasonic Lumix line for compact point and shoot. I believe they have been top of class for a number of years. I have last years model- TZ5 - which is pocket size, 3" screen, 10x optical zoom optical zoom, leica lens and takes HD video. I believe the new models are 12x optical and I'm sure I saw them at Cosco for under $200.

Do you happen to know the model # of your Panasonic?
Go with what OneCam said. The TZ5 is an amazing camera. LOVED IT. {Till I broke it during a bachlor party:thrwrck:} 10X Optical and another 4Xdigital. Like I said before though, the panasonic brand in general is user friendly.

If you did buy me a couple. I cant find them for under $450 online. The 12X Optical is the next step up the TZ7.

The TZ5 are a 9.1mp with 10X optical for anywhere from 200 to 300.
