need help with food plot

I have about an acre in the timber cleared out for a food plot. I have not done any prep work like getting rid of the weeds yet. The soil is not very good as its mostly gravel. I bought the throw and grow and was hoping to get it down between the third and fourth weeks in august. Could i spray the ground tomorrow with anything other than roundup and still get stuff to grow also considering the soil type? The soil does grow weeds and grass so i think it will grow with some fert. Any suggestions?

You will get out of it what you put into it. Kill weeds and break up the ground. Soil test is best. Ph also important. You can throw alot of money out the window if the soil is needed limed and fertilized and you don't do it.

Does winter rye grow in about any type of soil.

I can't think of anything that is easier to get growing than rye. I have literally had the stuff grow in the undercarriage of my ATV after a weekend of broadcasting seed where some of ends up trickling down into the nether regions of the suspension.

This would be an interesting test...can one grow rye on concrete? I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the answer is yes.

That being said, as someone else already posted, soil test and lime/fertilize as necessary for best results.
