Need Opinion on a Shot tonight

Took the shot tonight on a mainframe 10 with a sticker off his G2....looked like a perfect shot....he just walked away like nothing happened....tail was twitching as he's walking off...I watched the arrow pass right through him and seen the hole after the shot...prob. watched him for 3-4 minutes after the shot before I lost visual. Shot was at 6 tonight....haven't seen my arrow because I shot across 20 yds of water (River...it's pretty high right now)....anyone else ever had a deer just walk away like nothing happened?

Thanks,

FF

Just about ready to go take a look...it's 9:45!

Sounds like you hit him a little far back. The tail twitching is a sign of a dying deer. Wait untill morning then get after him. If you havent pushed him you will find him close by. I have hit a few does just like that and they just hunch up and walk away. DEAD DEER Let me know how it turns out.

Some deer respond to lethal hits differently. If his testosterone was all jacked up he might have just been unresponsive to the arrow initially. If you are confident in the shot and know you put it right through him, I'm sure you will recover him. Sounds as if you are giving him some time which is obviously a good thing. If you hit lungs, liver, heart.... he will be dead by now. If you got guts, you will find out soon enough.

A lot depends on the blood. What did the blood look like? Was it bubbly, dark red, green at all, etc.?...

I've seen deer take it right through the boiler room and just stand there. I also remember seeing a buck taken on video one time that was shot clean through and he actually came closer to see what happened before taking off.

Wait untill morning, I repeat wait untill morning. If hes dead now he will still be there. If hes not dead yet and you go tonight he will be gone. WAIT UNTILL MORNING!!!!!!!

I once hit a small buck right through the pocket that ran 10 yds then stopped, looked around like WTF? and started grazing. Dropped right on the spot within a minute as though he had no clue.

That said, if in doubt, wait it out.

I agree wait til morning. I shot one two years ago, got him a little back, he trotted about fifty yards and stood in the same spot for 15 minutes twitching his tail before walking over a rise where I couldn't see him. I went back about 11 the next morning, found my arrow, where he was standing (not much blood with a later hit) walked all over hell, came back to starting point, found 4 different beds and then him about 60 yards from where I initially hit him. I think he will be dead but wait til mid morning. It may ruin some meat but hopefully you will recover him. Good Luck

As hard as it is just wait it out, you will be much happier. The meat should be fine. especially if he is still alive untill the AM. A long sleepless night lays ahead.

It is hard to say if it will spoil, but if he isn't dead yet you will likely push him and never find him. I would probably wait until morning, but if you do go and the blood doesn't look good right away in the first 15 yards I would leave and come back in the morning. I shot one a few weeks ago, i wasn't sure of the hit and elected to wait until morning (turned out to be a hindquarter hit, must of been a deflection). It was a wise decision as the deer was still alive in the morning but on his last leg and I was able to finish him off. He would have been long gone if i chased him around that night. From my experience it is best wait if you are not sure.

Same thing happened to me last year. I knew I hit him could see some fletching sticking out still but he didn't do anything. Stood around and slowly moved off stopping now and then. Then just before he got down hill where I couldn't see him which was only about 40 yards I saw him start to get wobbly the he dissapeared. I got out and left for about an hour and came back. He only made it about another 20 yards. First time I shot a deer and it didn't take off like a bat out of hell.
He's dead don't worry.

If it looked good I'd go look, then again, where I come from if you leave them, you're looking for a head and skeleton. Good luckwith your decision, hope he's down close by.

alright.....you guys talked me into waiting till morning....shot was dead nuts broadside with his front leg slightly forward....I did not however see any blood pumping out immediately...thus is why I was alittle unsure to begin with and asked for an opinion. Wish me luck in the AM!

"Sounds like you hit him a little far back. The tail twitching is a sign of a dying deer."

What leads you to believe he was hit far back? Every deer iv'e ever watched twitches the tail before moving, they were all very much alive.

I've had deer react all kinds of ways when hit in the breadbasket, death run until tipping over, short run to a walk then tipping over, walk off then tipping over.

The 2 gutshots i've made both moved off hunced up, was pretty obvious.

Wait til morning is the best advice ever for any gutshot hit, or a hit that you're unsure of.

However,

"I watched the arrow pass right through him and seen the hole after the shot"

Do you know the anatomy of a deer? Is it a double lung shot or not? If it is there's no point in waiting over 30 minutes.

Not much to add here...same thing happened to us on video. My buddy shot one which looked perfect. The deer took off and stood for a couple minutes and then walked off, twitching the tail. We came back 4 hours later and had bumped him. We came back about 8 hours to find him in a fenceline still alive a little. A gutshot deer will no doubt die, but waiting is essential in this case. I know this is coming late, but I hope you find him...tough to track sometimes.

Providence to you! Best wishes

We found him this morning only to find him all bloated and orange/yellow tinted inside...he probably ran 150 yds and pile drove his snout into the sand. When I opened him up for an autopsy because I wanted to know where the shot placement was...Took out 1 lung...through the liver and a pass through the stomach...arrow must have found the way through with the least resistance and went the wrong way.......Thanks for all ur help...
