New Camera Help

Team Haastyle

Host of Haastyle Hunting
Been looking around to buy a new camera for filming our hunts and am a little behind in what is the current "cats meow" out there. Lookign for a camera somewhere under the $3,500 mark. I heard something about the Canon XHA1 is the way to go. Is this correct. Any help would be great. Thanks :way:

Looking forward to someone with knowledge chiming in as well, love to hear about some first hand experience...

It really depends on what you want to do with the footage. If your not planning on becoming the next Waddell than you can probably get by with some of the lower end HD cams like the cannon vixia series. Its all about priorities. I started out with a higher end GL2 (well, it was higher end when i bought it). I now am rolling with a vixia S10 from cannon and like it a lot better for what I use it for.

That Canon XHA1 runs about $7500 new. We bought a Sony HDR-AX2000 to film with this year and that runs right at the price range you are looking for.

Pay attention to the recording format as well. That Canon records to HDV film media while the Sony records in an AVCHD format directly to SD memory cards. I like the format but the file management and storage space requirements might be difficult to handle.

Good point. You have a whole nother beast on your hands managaing AVCHD footage from an editing stand point too. I bought a whole seperate external hard drive to hold all the footage. You will need it. It is sweet to not have to deal with tapes anymore though!! Love that!

I film with a Sony FX7 It is a HD camera and I also had to buy an external harddrive so that I can store everything for editing. I love the camera! It is the size of a GL2 and is around the $2000.00 mark.

I have used the canon xha1s and currently own a sony ax 2000(I believe thats the model number). Both are great cameras. I really loved the canon, but ended up upgrading to the sony because it is tape less. Due to the format of midwestwhitetail its really handy not to have to capture the video in real time. Both are in your price range.

Thanks for the all the input guys, will have to add the external harddrive onto my "to get list" haha, cant wait to jump into a HD camera. We have been filming with GL2's for a couple years but they just dont cut it anymore for our team. Cant wait to purchase our new camera.

I'm using a XHA1..... bought it for $2500 new.

it's a great camera...... Canon also has a HV30 or HV40 they are HD and run in the $600-700 range
