Just for perspective, I don't want to hijack this post but here is something to think about.
I was at a walleye tournament in Traverse City where Rompola is from and I got his address off the internet, so I was going to drop by and just talk to the guy.
At the tournament a police officer came up to me at the boat ramp and we started talking deer hunting. This guy was serious and even carried a couple pics of a big buck he had shot in his wallet. The name Rompola came up and I mentioned that I was thinking about going and having a chat with the guy. This officer got a look on his face and basically said it wasn't a good idea. Seems Rompola is quite a recluse. I was surprised to learn that many of the people who knew of him, and knew him seem to think it is very possible that the buck is real. He simply doesn't want all the attention and smearing of his character that goes along with it. He has a checkered past, to put it nicely, and every time his name comes up associated with this buck, people just set out to discredit everything he has ever done. Being a kind of off-the-edge recluse already, he just pulled the plug on the whole deal and put the buck in storage.
Hard to say what the real story is, but after that conversation, I look at Mitch and that buck in a whole new light. You gotta wonder if we will ever know the truth.
