New to the forumn and new to Iowa

Well to be completly honest I'm new to deer hunting all together. I moved to Iowa (Sioux City) and I'm now in a career that allows me the time to dedicate to deer hunting. Ive always wanted to but my previous career didnt allow the time. I have a few questions. I currently live in zone 3 woodbury county and I am looking for some places to hunt. There is alot of public land around but the flooding in town has ruined quite a bit of it for this year. I have a buddy with a small farm in plymouth county but the hunting oppurtunity is pretty limited. I have gotten alot of doe pics but no bucks yet. What is the best public land around NW Iowa. Killing a nice buck would be great, but I would be happy just finding a nice piece of land with average deer to get my feet wet. Any help you are willing to offer up would be great.

yeah, I'm assuming that you mean NW Iowa? NE Iowa has some great state land, but that's a haul from where you are. Let us know, and welcome to the addiction that is deer hunting :way:

Don't be discouraged by the doe pics... Last year was the first year I hunted where I'm at now, does are all I got until late september, then finally got a big ole SPIKE on camera... Didn't see a single buck until about the 20th of October and then all hell broke loose.... Ended up seeing more quality deer in my awesome 'DOE' spot than I have in spots that I get lots of pictures of early season bucks. The bucks WILL be where the does are when the rut hits, and If you can stand to not even start hunting that spot until about the 25th of October to keep the pressure down on the does, you will be fine. Chase all the does out, and then you can start worrying. Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice. I am planning on going out today to check a second cam I put along another trail by a bean field on the farm. My other camera is watching some crab apple trees. A few apples have fell from the wind and the deer have been all over it. I will be going out this wekend to hang two lockons and then I'm gonna stay out untill opening weekend. I am going to hunt thier opening weekend to avoid the rush on public land. What are the best places to hunt in NW Iowa. I found a nice little area called deer creek. Alot of acorn trees that will provide food when the corn comes out. I think it will be pretty good. I hear it doesnt get alot of pressure untill shotgun party hunting season. I was out there last week and didnt see any stands hanging yet.

There is several public hunting areas in Woodbury County that would be worth looking at, but Shag Bark near Correctionville, Oak Ridge near Oto, and South Woods near Smithland to name a few would be my top choices in the loess hills. Monona County has a lot of public hunting in the loess hills as well, near Castana. There is several public areas along the Missouri River but I am unsure if they will be huntable this fall, due to the flooding. Hope this helps.

Thanks KPM. I will get out my sportsman atlas and look those up. I hear the loess hills hold some monster deer.

Thats funny. I was wondering how long it would take for someone to say that there wasent any deer in the hiils. Trying to scare away the newbie :moon:

It's true, the mt. lions have driven them all east and north to the big cornfield country.

It's the mountain lions that are doing the damage... there's at least a half dozen roaming around the Hills.

But seriously. I grew up in Plymouth and have hunted the Hills my whole life. Great deer country, great people. Knock on doors and very good chance you can get into some hunting land. But most private land you'll share with other hunters. The public land in Woodbury/Monona/Harrison is amazing... we'd hunt it if we had the time. There's gotta be some giants in there! You'll find some good hunting... not sure if it will be in Plymouth county though. I grew up on the east side of that county and deer were tough to find (unless you had a group of 12+ guys a few trucks. Those guys found the deer somehow.)
