Newsweek article

My oldest son was selling magazine subscriptions as a school fund raiser and somehow we started getting Newsweek.

I picked up the December 4, 2006 issue (Hey, isn't it still November?) and was thumbing through it. I hit page 50, the Culture section, and the article was titled "The Elusive Hunter". I thought, "Uh oh, what's this?". I started reading it and the first paragraph or two was making me nervous. I was sensing that the author was someone who tried hunting but then "reformed". I read the whole article and that was not the case. I think the statistics cited in the article are questionable, but overall it is maybe a neutral article on the declining numbers of hunters nation wide. Iowa was one of the half dozen states that has had an increase in licensed hunters.

The article offered a link to what I thought would be just images from the deer opener in Tennessee, but from what I saw, looks like the whole article is there. The Elusive Hunter

Since I had read the article in printed form, I did not scroll down and see comments on the web page. I'm not surprised with the tone of the comments. I was surprised that Newsweek even printed such an article. I'm also surprised there hasn't been MORE of a backlash.

A little story, some how possibly related.

I have a picture of the Crab Claw buck as the background of my work computer. I also have a print hung on the wall by my desk. I had a woman come in yesterday and she asked, "Oh, is SHE asleep?". Being nice, I said, "No, HE is dead." I told her that I had been bow hunting. Her reply, "Hunting scares me! Aren't you afraid?" I told her the biggest risk was falling out of the tree, not being shot by another hunter. I went on to tell her I donated the meat to the local locker so that it could be distributed to the local food bank. She thought that was good. In all fairness to her, she is from a foreign country. She has been in the states for almost 20 years, though.

A glimpse into what hunting is up against.
