No luck...

I just moved to Iowa a month or so ago and I have been looking for a place to bow hunt. I have bought plat maps for several counties and put in countless hours researching assessor websites, calling landowners and going door to door what Im finding is troublesome. I would say 90 percent are leased by guys paying outragious prices and even in a couple instances they dont even hunt the property but they own next to it and dont want anyone hunting it....I thought I had something lined up through someone on here but me and another guy got screwed so to speak on that......does anyone have any suggestions?

What part of the state?

I am wondering the same.
I know in "my neck of the woods" it's top notch hunting & endless habitat and very little is leased up. I mean, I maybe can think of 2 or 3 pieces in a 10 mile radius I think might be leased and 100 that probably are not (at least from what I know of them) and getting permission is not impossible by a long shot. BUT- I sure have heard some stories like yours in spots like Eastern iowa or places close to large populations & cities.

You may have to do public!! A little work not a bad thing!!!!! Alot of nice bucks on public! You just have to go more than a 1/4 mile in!!! Now my take on this kinda post!!! There are alot of guys on here that will offer you up private land!! Jump on it! :way: I'm not one of them!! I could care less when, or why you moved to Iowa!! I don't know you! You may be a gift from god!! Sorry!! But than again the way Iowa's crops are going.....if you show a landowner a nice fat check!!!!!!!!! ?????????

Nice. Probably could have ended the post after the first three sentences and would have been just as useful, maybe even positive.

Back to the original post. Get an iowasportsmans atlas and look at the public ground in the area. Do some serious work on it and you will find good deer.

If you are in he eastern part of the state I know of a few good state areas that I could give you some info. on just drop me a PM.

True Crockett may have took it a lil far. But at the same time Im a Iowa native and public ground isnt bad I hunt it myself every year. And I wouldnt share my private ground with a stranger either. Hes got a point mabey a lil over the line but a point none the less. Good luck. Dont be scared of public.

I live in Ida county and came to Iowa for work. I am not trying to get in on anyones ground and Im not opposed to leasing...I have been looking in Appanoose and Henry counties. I have also looked in Ida and Shelby counties..but no luck! Feel free to ask any questions, I have 2 little boys, my life consists of work family and God....but come Nov I like to hunt as much as possible...

After your last post, I have a better understanding of your situation. You are trying to find land all over the state, some of it "highly desirable" trophy area.

IMO, you are fighting an uphill battle. In some of those areas, competition is fierce. Locals know it and will pretty much lock up any available land.

My advice would be to try to find some local landowners with whom you can establish a relationship so that you have some hunting access (maybe you have this). Then start branching out into "trophy areas" but almost any area in Iowa can have it's surprises.

Finally had some luck tonight, found a landowner who understands the problem with outfitters leasing ground and charging a ridiculous amount to hunt.....4500 a week is way to much for a chance to see a big one!

Perfect! I agree with this because I was in the same boat with shed hunting. Then I got positive reviews from other landowners and they talked about me to other landowners and when you go to those landowners about hunting/shed hunting you have a better chance. I got to know a landowner quite well and now I'm actually working for him by far his ground is my best shed hunting ground. Good luck!
