Mountain lion cleared in deer's death
A deer that was first believed to have been killed by a mountain lion was likely attacked by a dog or coyote, state environmental officials said Tuesday.
The deer was discovered last week by a property owner near Bangor in Marshall County.
Officials said it had claw marks on the hindquarters and puncture wounds to the neck and head. The 150-plus-pound deer was dragged 50 yards into some pine trees, leading DNR officials to believe it was killed by a mountain lion.
National mountain lion experts examined photos of the dead deer and determined its injuries were caused by a canine, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
"I'd say it's good news," said Ron Andrews, a DNR furbearer biologist. "All in all, it creates undue paranoia, and we want to avoid that above all else."
A mountain lion was spotted in Marshall County in October 2004, and the DNR was criticized for not getting the word out fast enough, said Rick Trine, wildlife biologist for the area.
"We erred on the side of getting the word out fast based on what we found, and I would much rather be corrected by the experts from out West, than to have it wrong," Trine said.
