nothing huge, just yard work

So I've discovered the beauty of 2-4D and the magic it works on dandylions, clover, etc... BUT, how do I kill crabgrass without killing the yard? I hate it when two days after I mow I have friggin 3 foot tall shoots on the crabgrass while everything else is nice and neat.

I used the Scotts crabgrass control with fertilzer. Its granular, I think 40 pound bag covers around 15,000 square feet at $50.00 per bag.

They also have just the crabgrass control without the fertilizer which would be less expensive. As I sit here tyoping I think it is a pre emergent so I'm not sure that would work???

They have a weed b gone with crabgrass control that you hook up to your hose. I used it last year with good results:way:

Is it actually crabgrass or is it fescue? I'm pretty sure there is a big difference between the two and fescue is going to be a lot harder to get rid of without doing a number on the rest of your yard!

I've been using Scott's 4 step. Oddly enough I found out today that what I thought was crab grass is actually a weird variety of blue grass so what I've been using may be doing the trick. Gotta figure out exactly what crab grass looks like I guess.

Where do you pick up Trimec?

Talked with our grounds guy.

He said Trimec will not help with Crabgrass.

Supposed to use Drive Herbicide on Crabgrass.

As far as the Trimec Plus I think I went either to Blains or Walmart.

Muddy,
In all seriousness hit it with round up. Get rid of it and reseed. It is cheaper and in the long run will be the best thing to do. We have had to do this in my Dad's yard with fescue and it works if you can deal with a few brow spots for a while. Do you have a lot of it or spots here and there?

Here and there for the most part. A little RU and then patching in small areas of sod would be easy.

Crabgrass has just barely began to germinate depending on your soil temps and more than likely you still can get away with a pre-emergent herb/fert for crabgrass control. Typically May 10 is the day they say that our region begins with crabgrass germination. We have had some unusual warm weather this spring. If that blue grass variety is bothering you then I agree with what others have suggested with the round-up and then spot seeding bare areas. Drive herbicide is absolutely the way to control existing crabgrass, it works great. I am not sure how big your yard is but I am pretty sure the smallest packaging Drive comes in is a 1 pound container and is a dry granular which treats 1 acre. They have rates for spot spraying also.
