Licenses Available in 50 Counties for November Antlerless Season

Hunters may purchase licenses for the three day November antlerless deer season Nov. 26, 27 and 28, in the 50 counties where antlerless licenses quotas remain unfilled. November antlerless licenses are only valid on private land where additional doe harvest is needed.

Hunters in the November antlerless season must wear blaze orange and party hunting is legal. Shooting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

Last year, 10,000 licenses were issued and hunters reported harvesting 2,980 deer. Portions of central, southern and west central Iowa along with Allamakee and Winneshiek counties would benefit most from additional doe harvest.

All deer taken must be reported using the harvest reporting system by midnight the day after the deer is recovered. Accurately reporting is an important part of Iowa's deer management program and plays a vital role in managing deer populations and future hunting opportunities. Hunters can report their deer on the DNR website www.iowadnr.gov, by calling the toll free reporting number 1-800-771-4692, or at any license vendor. For hunters with Internet access, online reporting is the easiest way to register your deer.

I would like to see this season discontinued!

But that is just my opinion, what do you members think

It's an awful season. Many bucks are poached and it ruins the last good weekend of bowhunting for many, including me. I think the population in most places is at an acceptable level now and the places that have too many deer yet are most likely the NR owned and both resident/NR leased lands that won't be hunted anyways, for the most part. GET RID OF IT!!!

I have heard that this will be the last year for the November antlerless season. It really has no effect around the places I hunt though.I don't think I have ever seen anyone hunting it.

With my story of seeing only one doe, in three weeks, it will be a long time bfore I ever have a personal, antlerless season, in my area.

I interviewed Tom Litchfield early this past spring and he told me this season was on the way out. As you can imagine, it takes a couple years to get all the adequate changes made. This might be the last time it runs.... Send an email during the next legislative session and be heard.

I like this season, fun to sit with the muzzy and shoot a nice doe. I live close to a refuge type area so low numbers aren't an issue, actually there are too many. Plenty of good bucks around as well. If this season goes away I'll be fine with it though.

They just need to get rid of the season. Only 30% of the tags are filled anyways. Most of these tags would be sold during the shotgun season as it is.

Everyone else knows a lot of bucks are being shot and tagged, reported as antlerless, especially on private ground where it's harder to patrol.

I'd say we can back off on this season, the deer herd numbers seem to be a lot more in control now.

Plus many people don't even know this season has been restricted to PRIVATE LAND only. Seen a bunch of guys running public ground last year that I told them of the change and they just kept on going. Makes it tuff to be out in a stand bow hunting that weekend..

So get rid of the season because people are breaking the law? Really, you think that will stop them?

I think it is a descent season and provides people the chance to get out there, even if only for a doe. I have hunted it before, but wont be this year. I also find it interesting that the press release says that its only for hunting on private land but it doesnt say that anywhere in the regs... Anyone else notice this?

I think legally putting a gun in the hands of many during this time of year encourages a lot of poaching. I know it does. So yes, get rid of the season because people are breaking the law MORE SO with the season than without. I highly doubt anyone would argue this, including the DNR...

Nailed it. This season never should have been started.

1) Its dangerous for bowhunters (in camo) still in the stand when other hunters (blaze orange) are driving deer and shooting guns.

2) This hunt falls on the last weekend of bow season. The last hurrah for some. Not to mention it is a 4 day weekend for many.

3) This hunt allows people to drive deer to another property one week before the shotgun opener.

4) This seasons allows to great of an opportunity for poachers to either tag a buck as an antlerless kill, or leave it lay for a week and go back and collect the kill with a statewide tag during the shotgun opener.

I'm all for more opportunities for more people to get involved in hunting, but not at the jeopardy of other hunters. Either do it right or stay home.

This season had a great intention when it was started. It was meant to be a season for service men and college students to come home for the Thanksgiving weekend and hunt with thier families. It was thought that it was the only time possible to do it as the Christmas holiday comes after gun seasons are over.It had good intent. But it quickly became what it is,A JOKE.

Hate this season...never thought it was any good. I've had a good number of bow hunts messed up because of it. Hope it goes away and stays gone.

I need to buy you a beer, you sound angry! Is somebody grumpy today? :drink2:

I completely agree! along with party hunting, this is the dumbest thing that happens in Iowa all year! ( except for Iowa state scheduling Iowa every year in football!) what are they thinking? haha :thrwrck:
