Everything winding down, and the harvest photos are getting slower. Thought this would be a good time to post mine. Thanks to my son who wanted me to post the story.
I had rattled in a small 8, but not much else, and was starting to think it was time to get out of the tree. My son had a birthday party at 11, and deer movement was slow. Lots of corn still in the fields in early November. A nice deer started coming toward me off of the dam, and I didn't have time to get a good look. I had seen some big ones last year, and had decided to wait it out, so I let him pass at 25 yards in front of me , then got the binos out to take a better look. It looked like a nice 10. He was messing around about 50 yards away, then decided to come back up the hill. He is coming broadside at 15 yards to my left. Perfect spot for a shot, so I decided to get ready. Full draw still deciding, and pulled the trigger.
Sounded like I hit a tree. Can you say, "forgot to use the peep site". This is only the second year of using a bow with a peep site, and it is not second nature to me. My indecision on whether to take a shot threw me off. Anyway, so there is this "Whap" of hitting what I thought was a tree, and then the stupid thing just falls over. His head was low and forward, and my shot was 3 feet in front of him. I stuck him in the neck, and he ended up flopping down behing a log. Had to get out of the tree a put a second shot in him. Only had a 25 yard drag to the trail by the pond. Shot him at about 8:15 on November 7. 10 inch G2's and some nice mass, and the horns are already on son's wall with Christmas lights hanging from them.
Photo taken by my son with pond in the background.
Birthday boy and a pic that shows the nice crab claw on the right side.
Oh yeah, and I gutted the deer, went home, got the camera and son, came back took pictures, loaded deer, got back home, hung deer in garage, showered, left house picked up balloons and was at the Bass Pro bowling alley for his birthday party at 10:45. I love having hunting ground close to home!
Also, thanks to whoever it was on this site that said "Don't pass one that you would shoot later in the season" I went out quite a few times the rest of November to try to fill a doe tag, and did not see any bucks even close to this one. Corn stayed in until Thanksgiving, and they just were not in my timber.
