NR Antlered Tag

Have always wanted to hunt Iowa and now that I am retired and have a little time on my hands I'd like to give it a try. Never applied, no preference points, don't know the counties, etc....

I do cast muzzleloading bullets commercially and have a customer that has offered to allow me to hunt his property in Taylor county (if I can draw). Want to do it with a bow.

I understand that this is about the last thing a resident wants to read, much less offer advice but thought I'd give it a try. I live in Utah and have provided the same type of info but sometimes really struggle doing so. Thx in advance for any help you can afford me.

Taylor county is clear across the state from me, so don't know anything about it. I think it should be decent and you have private ground to hunt, so go for it.

I'd guess it will take three years applying for you to draw an archery tag. Good luck. :way:

Yes, you usually draw on your 3 rd year, sometimes 4th. Taylor is a great county to hunt. If you have a friend with private land to hunt, you are cheating yourself by not going at least once.
I usually apply for points only the first year or two, then send in for a tag. Points are about $50 /yr. just go to Iowa DNR website, pretty easy to figure out. Also, Taylor is in zone 4. Good luck

Soooooo, the cost of the license is non-refundable, but the buck tag fee is, if I don't draw? That why you buy points for a couple years before applying?

I kind of hate the fact that when I apply out of state, they put my application/tag fee into an interest bearing account until the draw. Oh well, guess it goes to a good cause.

If you aren't drawn, you get your tag money back, minus an application fee. They will also keep the money for the preference point.

I was shocked that when I put in for a NR archery Wyoming elk tag this year and tried to buy a preference point, they refunded the point money because I drew. Hats off to WY!

I just don't want to front the money when I have no chance of drawing, it all works out the same in the end either way.

I don't mind them drawing interest on my money if they eventually give most of it back. Idaho makes you purchase a hunting license ($150+) before you can apply for a deer tag. If you don't draw, you get your deer application money back but you still paid for a hunting license you're not gonna need. Any idea when the application period is. I haven't checked the Iowa site yet, but don't want to miss it if it's coming up soon. Thx for your help!!

I think the app period for Iowa is one of those M months, March? May? Either way, you have a little time yet to educate yourself. The DNR has a great nonresident focused area of their website.

It starts around early May and runs for a month through early June. Randy is correct, the INDR site for NRs is very helpful. Unlike AZ and UT, you don't have to buy a NR hunting license to apply and you don't need to buy a NR license to buy a preference point (like you do here in AZ). Like others have said, if you have access to private ground, you need to experience it! I can't wait to get back up there and get back at it!

Great! Thx again.

Got a chance to hunt Kansas this year for the first time. My first whitetail hunt as well. Didn't connect but had a great time, saw some great deer and met some wonderful people.

Noexcuses,

I have no more to offer than what these guys have already mentioned.

But was wondering if you have ever considered a trade to hunt?

Continue asking your questions, most of us really don't have an issue with someone coming here legally and looking for a quality hunt such as they one you're talking about.
