Central Iowa, this big ol boy was shot in 1973 by the man next to it. His name is Jim Matter and he took it in Northern Minnesota and I think it is still the #2 Non-typical in Mn. One very impressive deer eh. Can't remember the score but think it was around 237 B/C, not sure anymore. Been about 2 years since I talked to him.

Yes, thats the James Matter buck, taken in the late 70's near Calloway, MN., which I believe is in Becker county. The deer scores 258 and change. I've seen this head many times and I'm not all that impressed with it. Can I say that about a 258 net buck? The problem with it in my eyes is the small typical frame, maybe 150's. But when looking through the B&C whitetail book, I see that the Missouri Monarch, Hole-in-the-Horn, and the Minnesota nontypical record Vacoch buck (high 260's) all have typical frames in the 140's. Just alot of extra bone off the frame. Imagine if one of these deer had a 200 inch frame? This is the main reason I believe we arn't even close to setting the top nontypical record yet. I think its just a matter of time before a buck gets killed that has a solid 200 inch frame AND 170 inches of nontypical to top it off. I know of a couple really big single sheds that have been found that support my thinking. Illinois has one right now, 180 inches, and its still alive!
