Had a customer ask if it's legal to cut his deer in half to carry out of field?
He's small orential man weighs maybe 110?? Hunt's the Loess Hills {public hunting} shot a nice 10 pointer,19 in. spread,10 in.tines,non-typicail.If they had to drag the deer out it would have been about 3-4 miles to the parking area.He had to track it down on private property,no way to get permission so had to come back 2-3 days later finish tracking it.He knew that he could'nt carry his gun with to find his deer, The yotes had it picked clean,so all he could save was the trophy!So is it legal to cut deer in half or quarter to tranport deer out of field?
[After it's tagged of course}

I've wondered that myself. I figured if for some reason the situation arose where I didn't have anyone available to help me drag a deer that I would just pack out the quarters and the head myself. If the tag was attatched to one part of it and there was a question by someone, you would think that when you had all the parts back together it would be obvious it was from one deer. Legal or not...I don't know???

This probably won't help the Iowa folks, but here in Nebraska you can seperate a deer into half so long as proof of sex remains attached to each half. I suppose you could even split the back half into quarters with proof of sex attached to each quarter, but that would take a little bit of skillful knife-work!
