Well, after a meeting at work this morning which kept me out of the woods at sunrise I decided to head out for a few hours to see if I couldn't drop bird #3 for the year. I noticed a tom in an open pasture on some ground I have permission to hunt and decided that I might be able to use the contours of the land to my advantage. I jumped out of the car and made my way to where I thought the bird was going. Hit the mouth call when I felt I was about 100 yards away and got an immmediate gobble. Now I am standing in the middle of a pasture (with some fairly long grass) with a bird fired up just over the hill in front of me. Never being in this type of situation before I just decided to sit down in the field and the grass covered me up to about the middle of my torso. I put the gun on the top of the knoll where I felt the turkey might crest and gave one more soft yelp on the mouth call. 30 seconds later I see a tail fan crest the ridge, I couldn't believe it. By the time the bird showed his head he was a mere 10 yards out. Bam, game was over and I had my 3rd bird. I still can't believe that it happened in this manner, I was back at my car less than 20 minutes from the time I shut the door. Bird was a real good one at 25lbs., 10 3/4" beard, 1 7/16 and 1 1/8" spurs. Second spur was broke off and rounded I assume due to a little fighting.
I guess sometimes it is better to be lucky than good, especially after the frustrating few days of hunting I had earlier this week.
