Opening morning for me bird

Like a chump, I worked yesterday partly to avoid the windy conditions and partly because I wanted to wrap up a big seeding project at work before the board of regents meeting at the new building next week. So today was opening day for me.

Curtis and I hoofed it back deep into some public land. After I long, sweaty hike, we managed to spook some off the roost close to where we were going to sit. We were still optimistic though, as this place has been pretty good through the years.

We set up near an old road bed the turkeys like to use and soon enough some birds were hammering, but some distance away. We figured we’d stay patient as long as we were hearing gobbles. At about 6:30, still not hearing anything on our ridge, I let loose with some sweet yelps and two birds gobble back and they are close. A little later Curtis calls and they are even closer. Pretty soon, I see them right where I expected to. They saw the decoys and were coming on a string. One of the birds started getting nervous so I decided to let the strutter have it at 25 yards.

Seems like 1st season was over as quickly as it started. 21.5 lbs, 8 3/4” beard, and 7/8” spurs. A great morning in the woods for sure!IMG_7120.jpegIMG_7124.jpeg
