Our sport lost a great one this morning...

Guys,

I know this is a whitetail forum and he is mainly well known in the waterfowl world, but our sport lost a great member today and a very avid bow hunter...not to mention a great member of the community of Danville. Bernie Boyle was killed this morning in a car accident north of Fort Madison when another fellow ran a stop sign and hit Bernies mini-van and flipped him.

For those of you that dont know of Bernie, he was the World Champion duck caller in 2002 and then again in 2004. In 2005 he won Champion of Champions (for those that aren't familiar, every 5 years, the past 5 champions get together and call against each other for the champion of champions title). He retired after the fact, and 3 worlds wins. Bernie helped a buddy of mine and myself...or anyone that asked in a heartbeat by breaking down contest routines or if you were just looking to B.S. a little. I also know that he was helping several youngesters in the community with hitting lessons and treated them like they were his own by following up on their games. I know this because when we were there getting lessons, his wife and daughter kept running out and giving updates on a young lady who was playing in state softball...he had been giving her hitting lessons since she was young. This is where I connected with him while chatting being a fellow baseball player. I didn't know him the best, but the few times we spoke you could always tell how outstanding of a person he was.

As Cody Davis put it on another site, "He was humble in an industry full of arrogant pricks and would help anyone that asked for it. When we'd be practicing he'd show me how to do this or that better and pure music came out of the call, he could have easily stepped in after being retired for 4 years and probably kicked anyone's tail on the stage."

Send prayers his families way guys. They will definitely need it to stay strong through hard times.

God be with you Boyle family.

Wow, that is SAD news, my condolences to the family. Way back in the day I also competed in some duck calling contests and Bernie was just getting involved in it back then. Although I did not know him really well, he was well thought of by anyone that I remember. Sorry to hear about this.

This exactly. Before I was bowhunting whitetails I was calling ducks and being pushed towards competition and he was always the one I loved to talk to. Always had time to talk (sometimes too much) The man will be missed dearly but he will always be a legend. Thoughts and Prayers to Bernie's family.

My thoughts are with his family and friends. There will be a lot of heavy hearts at this year's calling contest at Burlington as Bernie played such a huge part in putting it together and giving back to the waterfowling community.
