I know we have discussed this before and I know that the Badlands pack and the Cabelas CT450 were very popular choices. My question is, I am looking at buying a good pack. I am planning an Elk hunt within a couple of years. I also will be deer hunting in the Black Hills of South dakota and am planning on getting back pretty deep into the mountains. I would like to buy a pack that will meet my needs in the backcountry as well as my archery hunts back here in the Eastern Part of South Dakota. Would you reccommend buying one of the above packs, or should I go with a pack frame and purchase a good fanny pack for my archery needs? What are your opinions.

You asked.....Badlands 2800 should fit your needs nicely.

I am VERY happy with the Cabelas pack, works great and is VERY comfortable with heavy loads.

Really you have two completely diffenent situations in which you are hoping to cover with one pack. Possible? Well, maybe, but if you plan on doing any extensive meat packing...which may be the case on an elk hunt. You are going to want a frame pack. I have done a fair amount of hauling on caribou and moose hunts and one thing I have learned is nothing beats a good metal frame pack. Plastic frames just dont cut the mustard!

I have 3 pack frames and one is internal and the other two are external. I would recommend a external pack frame. I have a K2 Terra frame 6600. It holds alot of stuff, probable in your case 2 quarters and some gear, it opens all into one compartment and also has a fanny pack/day pack that is easily taken off incase for a last minute stalk or what not. Comes with a rain poncho and has alot of strapping on the outside for extras. It is very comfortable to wear but must be fitted to a t... carring 30 extra pounds is alot better when the pack is fitted for your body size, shoulder width, and a few others. Noway would I hunt with just a backpack, for your needs going into the deeps, I would totally recommend a frame.

Like DOR said you have two very different situations. I hunt in MN for whitetail and make a yearly trip out west for elk. We ussually just hunt day trips and i have found that this pack wors very well.

It is really versitale but if you are planning to pack meat out you need to get a quality external fram pack.
