Deer Hunter Suffers Minor Injury in Palo Alto County
DES MOINES - Adam Storey, 22, of Dickens, suffered a minor injury after being struck by a shotgun slug Sunday while hunting deer in Palo Alto County.
Storey was hunting with one group of hunters when a shot taken at a running deer by a hunter in another group went over a ridge and struck him in the upper hip. The shotgun slug did not penetrate the skin. Storey was taken to the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg where he was treated and released after sustaining a bad bruise.
The two separate groups of four to five hunters each were hunting adjoining public land areas north of Ruthven at approximately 9:30 a.m. Storey could not be seen at the time the shot was taken at the running deer by a hunter in the other group because there was a ridge, said DNR Recreational Safety Officer Marty Eby.
Eby said the shot travelled more than 300 yards before striking Storey.
The DNR was assisted at the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, the Palo Alto County Sheriff's Department and the Palo Alto County Conservation Board.
"The assistance we received on the scene from the other law enforcement agencies really helped a lot because we had two separate groups and we had a lot of hunters that needed to be interviewed," said Eby.
The incident remains under investigation by the DNR.
