Deer Hunter Suffers Minor Injury in Palo Alto County

DES MOINES - Adam Storey, 22, of Dickens, suffered a minor injury after being struck by a shotgun slug Sunday while hunting deer in Palo Alto County.

Storey was hunting with one group of hunters when a shot taken at a running deer by a hunter in another group went over a ridge and struck him in the upper hip. The shotgun slug did not penetrate the skin. Storey was taken to the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg where he was treated and released after sustaining a bad bruise.

The two separate groups of four to five hunters each were hunting adjoining public land areas north of Ruthven at approximately 9:30 a.m. Storey could not be seen at the time the shot was taken at the running deer by a hunter in the other group because there was a ridge, said DNR Recreational Safety Officer Marty Eby.

Eby said the shot travelled more than 300 yards before striking Storey.
The DNR was assisted at the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, the Palo Alto County Sheriff's Department and the Palo Alto County Conservation Board.

"The assistance we received on the scene from the other law enforcement agencies really helped a lot because we had two separate groups and we had a lot of hunters that needed to be interviewed," said Eby.

The incident remains under investigation by the DNR.

Good gracious that is too many people getting shot this year. People need to relax a little before slinging lead every direction and recongnize what is past their target.

Especially on public land. Isn't rule #1 don't shoot over a hill (ridge)?

There were a few accidents up this way this weekend as well. Im just glad with the way people gun hunt out here (drives) that Iowa doesnt allow rifles to be used. That slug hit that kid from 300 yards and didnt even penetrate the skin? wow, shotguns are such inferior weapons, but yet you always see guys flinging lead at deer that are a couple hundred yards away :thrwrck:

It is amazing to me how stupid some people can become when they put an orange vest on and have a deer run in front of them. BE CAREFUL! Like DannyBoy said, "you have to know whats beyond your target" if you dont, you shouldnt shoot plain and simple. Just makes the decision to not shotgun hunt easier and easier! Hope we have no more accidents the rest of the way. Prayers sent to the families.

Seeing as there was no penetration, wouldnt it have been better not to call it in? Just gives them another number for their stats.

There were three different groups hunting a 200 acre piece of public land AT THE SAME TIME over near me this weekend! How in the world could anyone know where anyone else was when they were driving it three different directions? I was waiting to see Bonker show up in the chopper to haul some sorry sob to the hospital! Its crazy what some people will will do for a deer.
