Parcel map question

SCOFFIN

Miles Coffin
I'm looking at property online on the Dallas County GIS page and when I identify a parcel and it shows the owner as "Dallas County", what exactly does that mean? I see quite a bit of land around the river that shows Iowa DNR as the owner, but is this Dallas County land public hunting as well? Or, are these conservation area's that they don't allow hunting?

The online GIS data pages are excellent sources of ownership information. They are typically quite accurate with landowner info and also where the boundaries are (it will often also give you the financial transaction data, such as how much so and so paid for it).

As far as government ownership, you really need to check it out with the agency listed. Not all government lands are open to public hunting, such as state parks, but will usually show up as just Iowa DNR in the deed holder column. I would start with the county conservation board folks and ask them specifics about the tract you are looking at.

Also, lots of land in trusts, do you have to contact the trustee for those? Thanks for the help..

Those can be really difficult to track down. Some counties have an entry for deed holder and also one for controller. The controller is typically the decision maker for the property. You can also get contact info directly from the assessors office. Just give them the parcel number.

The Iowa sportsmans atlas has all the public areas listed. Well worth the money at walmart. Or name the spot and I can tell you here. Have one in my lap.............ck
