Paying to hunt private ground

I am looking for some private ground to hunt. I come from the south and I am use to paying for hutning leases/clubs. I posted on craigslist looking for a farmer that would want to lease his ground but got nothing. Any suggestions? Whats the best way to go about securing private ground to hunt? I would be willing to pay $500-$1000.

Unfortunately $500-$1000 is not going to get you much now days. Maybe a 40 or 80 acre piece. You may try advertising in a local paper.

I wasent really sure what leases go for around here. Thanks for the info. I am going to run an ad in the paper here in Sioux City and see if I get some response. It would be great to find it for free by knocking doors, but I just figured land owners get hammered with that stuff everyday and didnt think it would be very productive. Maybe I'm wrong but I dont know anybody around here and that seems to be the ticket for finding ground to hunt.

You'd be surprised at how many places you can find by knocking on doors. They may be small tracts of land that other hunters over look for that reason, or because other hunters already have "their" spot locked and ready for the year. IMO no local wants or needs someone new to the area to begin leasing up the ground. You wont make too many friends in the area if you do so. Lease as a last resort.
There is a ton of public ground to the south of you in the Loess Hills. Great ground with big steep hills. If you are willing to put in the hard work the payoff in the hills can be tremendous!

I would try getting a plat map or looking online for some ground then hit the owner up with a smile and a handshake like dedgeez recommended.
Good luck!

leases go for about $20 an acre. i dont know if yall have a market bulletin but thats always a good place to look. sometimes local magazines have classifieds.

a handshake and willingness to help them around the farm if they need it go a long way. Some may ask you to help one day, others may just think you'll be in the way, but its always nice to put that out there. Also, through knocking on doors they can see what kind of person you are. By no means do you need to be in a tie or anything of that nature, but be somewhat cleaned up and lookin "normal" and you'd be suprised how quickly you could land some spots. I mean, the worst they can say is NO right? And if they do, tell them thanks and head to your next door! Maybe the next year they will remember you and if you knock again, you may get a different answer :)

This year, Iowa opened up a new program that the state pays landowners to lease their land for outdoorsmen to take advantage of.. I'm sure there are some good areas that will be overlooked being that this is its first year.

I wouldnt even offer money to bow hunt. Nice smile and a hand shake goes a real long way.Its not the cash its closing the gates and not blowing the heck out of the place target shooting.Card at christmas is worth a million . :)
