permit question

Hi everyone. Didn't know where to go with this question, figured I might get some help here.
I'm turning 21 in just under a month and would like to know exactly what I have to do in order to purchase and carry a hand-gun. It's been my plan to buy my first handgun on my 21'st birthday, so I want to take any mandtory training etc. before that day if possible.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Any suggestions on a good gun to start with would also be much appreciated. Want something that can be used deer hunting, but don't want too much recoil.

Thanks,
loesshunter

To purchase you must have a "Permit to Acquire", this is $5 and available from your local County Sheriffs office, after 3 days and a clean background check you may purchase the gun. Permit to acquire is only good for 1 year. It allows you to buy a handgun instantly with out a waiting period.

To obtain a concealed carry permit you again need to go to your County Sheriff and (this varies a little) interview with the Sheriff, explain your purpose for wanting a permit, a background check is performed, then take what ever class (written & possible shooting test) is required. I think the first time it's around $35 then $10 each year to have it renewed. This is called a "Non-Professional" permit and is good for 1 year. "If" you have this permit, the "Permit to Acquire" is not needed, your carry permit will allow you to purchase a handgun on the spot with no waiting period.

If you are handgun hunting for deer in Iowa, no concealed carry permit is required.

Depending on which county you live, a concealed carry permit can be difficult to obtain. Story, Johnson, and some of the more populated "politically liberal" communities are nearly impossible to get one. The code states it is up to the discretion of the Sheriff as to who gets one or not.

Hope this helps....Rembrandt

A good deer handgun would be a .357 -.41 - 44mag revolver....here's a picture of what I use, .44 Magnum Performance Center Smith...very happy with it.... http://www.smith-wesson.com/sport/images/performance/m657ch.jpg

Another handgun choice is a 10MM. You can get an automatic like a Glock 20, or revolvers in this caliber. It can apporach the 41 Mag power level with some loads, but there are also loads out there in the 40 S&W power factor that hardly kick at all!

It can be a good all around caliber for hunting, IDPA, or plinking.
