Persimmon tree

I planted a grove of 9 persimmons in late may early April . Trees were from 8 - 12 ft tall , only one leafed out and one budded but nothing from the others , any ideas why? Had actual landscapers plant them so should have been done right.

Are those in your yard? Maybe try some from MDC next time. They took about 7 years to bare fruits in my grandparents garden. Now, they drop 5-gallon buckets full of the fruit and the deer make it look like hogs are under those trees. You can get them for $1 a tree up to 50 and then the price cuts get pretty deep if you are ordering more.

This tree is now 12 years old and was so heavy with fruit last year it weighed down the limbs.

That is the Missouri Department of Conservation and they sell those and various other trees in small sizes. Why yours aren't doing good may be because trying to move such a large size and transplant shock was too much to shake for them. I don't know how others feel, but even when I transplant small ones, seem to have more stress than some other species of trees.

I bought 5, tiny seedlings from a place in Iowa,,won't say where. All died. Place even sent me more. They died too. I have one,,,I started it from a seed from fruit from neighbor's tree. Grew it in a pot, and transplanted it. It is growing great. It comes from a self pollinating be tree. I think they must be touchy to grow.

The smaller the better IMO on transplanting trees. Unless they are grown in root pruning containers. Problem I run into tho with big "pots" so to speak is the soilless media they are grown in is way more porous than the soil they are planted in. This causes the water to sit in the hole and act like a pond drowning out the roots....

Persimmon trees have very course roots and are susceptible to transplant shock. Bare root transplants can’t stand competition and won’t survive dried soil. Unless you get regular consistent rain you will need to water. Once trees are established they are much more drought resistant. They don't like "wet feet" either. An area that will naturally grow walnuts is perfect for persimmons.

Where can you get decent Persimmons in Iowa? I want them in Pots if I can get them that way. I have heard people buy them somewhere in Mo ???

Just an FYI to any potential persimmon tree planters...

A few years ago I bought a couple dozen bare root persimmon seedlings with the idea of planting them at my farm and developing a bona fide persimmon mini-grove. (This was just one of many failed habitat improvement projects on my place! :grin

I planted them one week and by the next week when I came by to fence them off, quite a few of them appeared to have been dug up. I don't know for sure what happened, I wish I had left a game cam "watching" the area. I suspect though that some pesky critter smelled the fresh dirt and dug there looking for whatever and happened to uproot my fresh plantings in the process.

So I don't know if my experience was a "one off" or something that others may run into as well. But I would suggest fencing them off as soon as they are planted to guard against this possibility.

You may as well plant some, wildlife will like them. If you want to eat them, then get one of the grafted selections.

I'll plant them in large amounts. I just count on over half not making it. Fussy tree to transplant. Absolutely have a lot that got nice size but I had to plant many.

The ones I have growing are 2-5 miles (different farms) from the IA line just south of Wayne County. I doubt the growing conditions are much different when you cross over the line. :way:

I got mine from MO DNR. I planted em early April and had excellent weed control. I tubed the survivors right away.
