How'd everyone do on opener? Pretty tough sledding up here with all the corn still out there. Only one for me during that miserable rainy windy Saturday, but did get a limit today by about 11 AM. It's only going to get better.
Is the poulation in your neck of the woods pretty good? The last few years in south and east IA, the numbers have been marginal at best. Congrats on the rooosters
too much corn, too much wind. saw a truckload of polk county hunters that i had better not see around here again. driving through some fields that i doubt they had permission to be on. i should have turned them in to the landowners. kinda kicking myself for that. won't let it happen again
Shredder,
Yes...populations around here are pretty good. We had a tough winter and torrential rain in September; neither of which helped. I'm sure the numbers are down some from a fantastic 03 season...but still should be a decent year.
Our group only got 8 all weekend compared to last years limit of 12 each day, just too much corn. On the good side, my 10 month old lab did well, hunted close and pointed her first bird today, even if it was a hen.
I was done by 8:30 on opening day. Then I drove by a couple of other places I have permission to hunt to make sure no one was there and saw the white belly of a deer in the hay field about 100 yds from the road so I walked out to see if it had been hit by a car or if it was injured and found it had a bullet hole right through the front shoulders and was still fairly fresh. It looked like it had been shot in the middle of the night or early morning. The worst part was it was a button buck and apparently they did it for fun. I called the DNR officer and he said he would check it out but I haven't heard anything about it.
This was the 1st pheasant opener I have ever missed since I started hunting. It was a good one to miss with all the corn in. Heard alot of people being disgusted about the amount of birds they shot. Thats what I love to hear, after the first two weekends the fair weather hunters stay home
